His point is valid though. In a community you need to contribute before asking for something. Give first take later. Online or otherwise.
If the OP had spent time contributing to topics and then had made this request, it's different.
This is spam. It's scummy. And that's why the many arseholes on this forum, actually have a point this time.

It's not some Nigerian crap where somebody is trying to get you to part ways with your money, it's some local runner trying to get sponsored for some marathons. I think it's a bit over the top for a minor newbie offense. Do people get up in arms when they get those unsolicited Ride to Conquer Cancer donation requests?
If people feel strongly about it though, why not see if the mods can restrict thread making until a certain number of posts, or better yet, thanked posts.

I don't think you've offended anyone (and I'm fairly certain no one thinks you're in Nigeria). All that's happened is you've come as a stranger into a community (of sorts), asked that community to support you without giving it any reason to do so, and are now witnessing the community expressing its perplexity at the request, along with the community's regulatory response. In short, it is our expectation (generally) that you want unearned support for your personal reasons, and will withdraw again from the community once you've obtained it.
Now charity, on the other hand, is different. Perhaps you could take a few minutes to explain how our votes could help you help others. That would be something we could all get behind. We're not a big bad bunch of internet bullies; we'd just like a good reason to get behind you as opposed to someone else, or no one at all for that matter.
I still think this thread could go either way.

Had this been something for charity, maybe it would be different
But this is pure ego and for selfish reasons.
"I", "my", "me" was used 8 times in her OP here and I won`t even bother to count how many is in her story on that site. She brags about how she`s the first woman to do some marathon and now she wants to be the first at doing this. Doesnt that tell you anything?

It's worth asking why she deserves the sponsorship more than others though. Does being the first to post on CP make her a better choice than other entrants. Personally, I'd rather cast a vote for the girl who suffers from depression and wants to run across Canada to raise awareness of mental illness and would provide a chunk of the money to an organization that also shares that end.
Also, when I look at what it costs to do the North Pole marathon and see €11,000 I can't help be curious about whether this girl even needs sponsorship. Were previous runs also dependent on sponsorship or self-funded? If the latter, I'd be even less inclined.
Really though, is there a good reason why anyone from CP should want to support her over others in the contest?
EDIT: Having now read the article she posted about her previous run I'm much more sympathetic. Should have led with that and a promise of some other charitable actions to come out of it.

These make me feel good knowing that if I ever stumble across something I take a huge interest in that I might get support having a join date from long ago (lurked for years before I joined as well).
However, given that it took me so many years to join, and that I have pretty low interaction I also realize I would still struggle to get support. As it should be.
Also, I'm drunk.

Trying to recreate the Wannamaker fiasco is lame. A few are trying a bit too hard for that to happen. The Wannamaker magic just happened, it wasn't forced.

A lot of times I have tried to explain to people something that happened here that is funny, or interesting and it goes like this 99% of the time.
"So, this one time on Calgarypuck."
"Calgary what?"
"Puck"
"Puck what?
"You know, that Flames fan website?"
"Ohhhhh yeah, Calgary Flames dot com"
"No, no, the other one Calgary puck."
"What puck?"
"Nevermind."

I'm not voting because of the thread title. I spent the entire time reading the OP waiting to see what she was going to do at the airport.
This replacing the word "Calgary" with "YYC" is more offensive than her join date.

That she is proud of her athletic accomplishments? And has set some pretty lofty goals for herself?
I dunno... I think sometimes people are looking for a target to pile on.
Someone makes a thread saying that they are an athlete with their eye on a goal and need help reaching that goal. Maybe it's just me and looking at the incredible thing that she wants to try, but I don't have a problem with this thread. She doesn't make money off this venture. She's not selling anything.
I would have voted for her, but (a) I voted for the YOW girl since that's where I live and (b) she's lost even more weight than I have, which always impresses the hell out of me.

Maybe I'm wrong, but of course, that's the whole point of becoming a trusted member of the community BEFORE you ask for it's support. It removes a lot of these questions. Not to mention, it's just good netiquette.

As for the OP who wants to run amongst penguins and polar bears, it feels like spamming to me when you join an unrelated online community exclusively for such personal gain. That makes me uncomfortable.
I have garnered votes from the CP community and I have voted for others for such causes, but in all cases myself and the members I have supported have made some effort to contribute on CP beyond pointless spamming.

What the heck is going on in this thread?
I thought we had a code here on CP when it came to things like this (an unwritten rule if you will). So imagine my surprise when I open up the thread and see folks rushing to her defense.
CP, I am disappoint.

You are disappointed that people are not following an unwritten rule? Oi. Maybe you should lobby the admins to make it a written rule.
I have a "No Solicitors" sign on my door, but don't mind if a student looking for help getting funding for her band trip stops by. I don't put the student on the same level as the Direct Energy scammers that I am trying to repel.

Doesn't that bolded part describe Michael Ha? The contest he alerted us to was at least somewhat educational in nature, and look at what we did to him.
So I guess I am just trying to figure out what makes this request so darn special that all of a sudden it is mean to instantly vote for someone else.

Yeah my reaction is bah spam... If the person signed up just to request votes, I will not vote for them unless its moves me. I'm also not going to be a jerk about it either, but if anything I got to read about Jennifer Branson who is one hell of an inspiration!
Looking at those pictures of her before going on my biggest loser show helps add a little extra motivation! So yeah vote for Jennifer Branson!!
