Gillies was the top freshman goalie in US D1 college play last season, according to most.
Not just goalies, he was the top freshman in all of Division 1 last season.

Gillies for me. Has franchise goaltender written all over him, IMHO.

I am really hoping that he makes a big leap this year and that next summer we are all trying to figure out who fits in better as top line material between him and monahan when considering the flames' roster in a few years.
I am confused. If Ramo is kept on the list, would he not be the most important/best prospect for the team without a bona fide starter? I mean, like most here, I am very excited about seeing Monahan play because of his high draft ranking, but even after three voting rounds, the poll results indicate that voters place more significance on the prospects way down the importance totem pole than a starting goalie. What am I missing here?
SebC can't get past goalie stats. He's not into anything beyond the stats. The stats tell all for him. Awards? Irrelevant. What hockey people think? Irrelevant. Watching the guy play? Irrelevant.
This was the guy who was blaming all our problems on Kiprusoff a couple years back based strictly on stats. Wouldn't respect any argument based on Kiprusoff's actual play.
Went with Wotherspoon last time because I think he is at least a 5/6 in NHL and maybe a 4 and doubt that Gaudreau/Gillies/Jankowski ever do much at the NHL level but can see how people can be excited by the flash of Gaudreau.
Typical moon pessimism

Re. the goalies - I would exclude both Ramo and Berra due to the large amount of pro hockey they have played. It is also just too hard to figure out where they sit against the younger guys.
None the less, Gillies is the guy here for me - I think these are the clear top 4, things get trickier now for sure. Lots of guys that could be slotted in the five slot.
Yeah, I didn't really want to vote for the guy because I don't think he should be on this list, but I think he's the best player available right now, so I voted for Ramo because it would be silly to see him in the middle of the pack.
Went with Jankowski for the same reasons I went with him last round. He has offensive skill, a two-way game, a long reach, a smooth stride, an accurate shot, great vision and soft hands. When the biggest knock on him a couple years ago was his size and now he's reaching towards being 6'4'' it's a reason to get excited. He went from undrafted in the OHL draft to the youngest 1st rounder in the 2012 NHL draft. Often overlooked is that he's only a month older than Monahan.
Once he fills out and hopefully starts playing "bigger" he'll be able to put it all together and become a legitimate top 6 center prospect. If not he still has the compete level, the defensive game and the size that should make him a great role player.
I think Sieloff could make a strong push for the Flames this season. He brings a solid physical game with a bite to it which we haven't seen since Regehr was 25.
Jankowski has a huge ceiling, but he's still ways off reaching that potential.
Nice to see such a wide range of votes. Many solid prospects to consider after the 'big 3'.
I picked Gillies over Jankowski, but I am pretty high on both. The only reason I picked Gillies is because I see him as having franchise goaltender potential, but see Jankowski as a potential #1 center, but not a franchise player.
I am of the opinion that you can't tell how good a goalie is through SV% and GAA. It doesn't factor in scoring chances, only shots on net.
Teams sometimes allow more perimeter shots that most decent goalies will make. They do a better job of blocking passing lanes, and recovering rebounds. They can make decent goalies look phenomenal on stat lines.
In retrospect, phenomenal goalies on weak teams will look to have pedestrian stats - even below average stats. Just look at the Flames since '04. Kipper's numbers were very up and down. And though he had a couple struggles on his own merits, he was a fairly consistent goalie for the Flames. His stats varied widely because of the team's approach to defence.
Watch Gillies, and you can see why fans AND analysts are so high on him. Watch his stat-lines only, and you think he is a 'decent' prospect but wonder why everyone is so hyped on him. I really think you have to look at 2nd, 3rd and 4th scoring chances. You have to factor in high-quality scoring chances. You have to factor in so much other advanced stats to see the quality of a goaltender if your own eyes aren't on them. I am a big believer in stats and advanced stats, but I am even a bigger believer that they will never replace a good set of scout's eyes on a player.
Same thing goes for Jankowski. You can't look at his stat line without factoring in where this prospect came from and his last 2 years' worth of growth, competition, league level jump and systems play. You have to see what he does.
Slight edge to Jankowski for me, but I can see either one flipped over the other here. #1 centers are much, much more difficult to acquire, but at this stage Gillies is a more 'sure thing' than Jankowski. #1 centers have in my opinion more worth to a team. Toss-up for me.
Went Sieloff, mostly because I like this kids style. I think he has the best qualities of both Regher and Gauthier. Gonna be an Oiler killer, and Oilers fans will whine about him for years.
This was the guy who was blaming all our problems on Kiprusoff a couple years back based strictly on stats. Wouldn't respect any argument based on Kiprusoff's actual play.
Ridiculous micharacterisation of my argument. For starters, Kiprusoff's stats were determined by his actual play. Furthermore, my argument had less to do with the cause of Kipper's stats (although that was part of it) and more to do with the magnitude of the effect of Kipper's stats on the Flames' overall success.
Long time reader but first time poster. I went with Gillies. I think he has the tools to be an all-star/franchise goalie. Had I voted in the 3rd round I probably would have went with him then. The next 3 or 4 rounds is where it is going to get difficult and exciting at the same time. Seeing how close some of the top prospects and the depth we have acquired. Looking forward to the results.
