If you are young and like to go out to eat and go to coffee shops and bars, and you don't mind the commute (hint: live close to Caltrain) the city is definitely your thing. I kind of wish I at least lived up there for a little bit before I bought my place and settled down in the suburbs. Oh well. But time was a priority for me.
As CFF suggested, among the areas, I kind of like the Mission/Dogpatch area in the city. SOMA might be a have been a good choice, but didn't Zynga pretty much make prices go through the roof? lol @ CFF's comments on the Tenderloin.... for the few times I actually head up to the city, I park in a garage in the Tenderloin. Its an... experience.
Last comment, consider CityCarShare and Zipcar. You'd be surprised how fast you burn through 6 figure salaries here.
