They are well aware that offer sheets happen quite infrequently?
By electing arbitration these guys put some pressure on the Jets to negotiate and come to an agreement. It creates a deadline, and deadlines usually bring a result of some type. I think the fact that the Jets have so many RFA players likely plays a role here. In the case of the Flames the only guy is Backlund who could have went to arbitration that is a somewhat significant player so it's easy for Feaster to prioritize him, and than work with the rest. Whereas out of Bogosian, Wheeler, and Little, that one is a bit more murky as to who get's priority.
I would think Wheeler is a tough case and that's the first domino to fall, they have Ladd locked up long term for a pretty friendly cap number of 4.4 per year. So they may be trying to use that as a team cap, although Kane is paid more on a longer term deal, so I suppose he could be the ceiling, but if you survey the market for 26 year old players who produce like Wheeler, and play his ice time the market is probably closer to 5 million a year for a guy like him for this final year before he's RFA. The Jets may also have been refusing to do a one year deal too so by going arbitration Wheeler would have the chance as a 27 year old UFA to really cash in next year should the cap go back to the level it was at for the 2013 season.

The narrative from some posters regarding the Jets is akin to Fox news channel and their coverage of democrats. The Jets have had problems signing RFA's? Kane signed long term, Ladd signed long term, Pavelec long term. Of the Jets who filed I would guess that maybe 1 or 2 if any actually wind up going to arbitration. These are young players who are key pieces that the Jets ownership and management knew were coming up for a raise and are going no where.

If the Jets can get Bogosian, Little, and Wheeler locked up at a budget number that works for them this season, than they are in pretty good shape for the next 3 years. Question becomes how much can they spend this year...can they go to 60 million? The dollar is starting to drop in value, and could be worth 90 cents a year from now. So that 8-10% drop in currency can start to squeeze the smaller market Canadian teams.

I think in less than 20 years will we see another "Save our Jets" campaign and asking the provincial government to build them a new arena.
Warning signs: Can't spend to the cap, non-playoff team, trouble signing UFAs/RFAs, small arena.

Yeah, that David Thomson owner is pretty poor, not to mention the 9000 capped waiting list. Ill never get some people on here, who act like the Flames weren't almost in the same spot.

The waiting list will dwindle to zero eventually without on-ice success. If it becomes a situation where they are losing money every year, it won't matter how rich the owner is.

I also have trouble seeing how $4mil or less is an overpayment for a second line center with Gagners numbers? Heck i've heard predictions of the Oilers having to fork out close to $5mil for 4 or 5 years to get Gags signed. If those arbitration sheets are what is really being asked for & I'm MacT, I offer Gagner 2 years at $4.25mil per & look like a good guy!

They are not. This link was to a sample presentation by the "club" of some law students doing arbitration presentations as a hobby/practice.

I'm not an expert on Bailey or anything, but judging by his stats last season it looks like he is pushing for a fulltime top-6 spot.
In this day and age, it seems like anytime you get get a top 6 forward signed to anything less then 4 mil is a bargain . I think once he solidifies himself as a top 6 forward he will be well worth the contract.

He will also bring up how he never made more than a million and he won 5 cups there. So thats the benchmark that the team uses....forgetting the contract he gave Horcoff.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC 1m Regarding Sam Gagner. He has asked for $5.5M on a one-year deal in arbitration (as reported by @DarrenDreger ). EDM's ask is $3.5M...

Kind of crazy that Hudler @ $4 went from looking like an overpay to normal contract for an average producing munchkin in about a season.
