Anyways, congrats Nicker. I haven't been back in a long time but I'm sure it hasn't changed much since I last lived there in '96.

Awesome man!

At the risk of being the butt of a joke .. I'm actually starting in Forrest lawn. My wife's family bought houses there way back when. Her grandma paid like 15k for her home. Anyway , it's a free place until we get moved, settled, and figured out what's going on. Can't beat free and to be honest , everyone says its the ghetto. I haven't seen any gang members waving pistols and Assault rifles in broad daylight like I have seen in places here so not really that ghetto.
I think we are looking somewhere in the Northwest though. I don't really care yet because I'm not familiar with communities. To move to Canada I told my wife I needed flames season tix and a man cave with a projector. I'm easy to please.

Yeah it's not horrible. It's not permanent. The only thing I am worried about in Calgary , as compared to Oklahoma, is horrible traffic and/or the fact that it seems to take 45 mins- 1 hour to get anywhere it seems.

Traffic sucks. Our 'ghettos' are nothing compared to most places.

Ok CP lets talk cable /Internet/ and cell phone providers.
I currently have an iPhone 5 , I don't pay attention to how much data I use bc I'm still grandfathered in to unlimited ( gonna be tough to give up). Any recommendations for providers there? I'm sure prices are going to be a kick to the nads for me.
Also as far as cabl/ Internet I have all the sports channels here and 50mbps Internet. Any suggestions on providers for this?

Telus will give you a free laptop or tablet if you sign a contract with them, shaw has no contracts but their service sucks. Bell/telus/Rogers all have similar service with pros and cons for each

Forest Lawn is going to be a really trendy community in the next 10-15 years due to its proximity to downtown anyway.
Yay gentrification!

One thing I notice about shaw in Calgary is they have free wifi for customers at places like the mall.

Disagree. Shaw's customer service may not be awesome, but the actual services you pay for, the Internet and TV, are better than Telus.

I think it's actually forrest heights not lawn ...nonetheless I don't mind staying there for a while. The house is nice enough until I can get my work permit and a job. I don't need much anyway ... Just a big tv, my Xbox, and sports stations. I'm actually more worried about being able to find a place(s) to skate more than once a week ( like I get in OK) than I am about where I'm living.

I know that Telus does bundle discounts for TV+phone+internet. I have Telus TV and internet and I'm quite happy with their service. Maybe Telus customer service might suck, but the product, to me is A+. Besides, customer service will suck no matter who your provider is. Also Telus gave me a 42 inch LED TV when i signed a 3 year contract.
Edit: Oh and welcome to Calgary

I had shaw for years, my Internet would not work for days at a time, cable would cut out(almost always during flames ppv) and when we would complain about it we would get nothing for our troubles. With telus any issue we've ever had we actually get a credit or some sort discount to make up for it, not to mention someone actually answers the phone when you call customer service. Shaw's biggest selling point is no contracts, but that works both ways since they basically use it as an excuse to not compensate you for lapses in service.

The service difference between Shaw and Telus is pretty much negligible (IMO). Basically, just look at the two, what they offer for the price, call them and see if you can play them against each other and make a decision.
If you can get friendly with some of the neighbors, ask their opinions. Shaw service may suck in one community while being significantly better in another.
Also, knowing that you're moving, ask about relocation fees and if they'll charge to have service call to make that happen.
