In 1989, right after the Stanley Cup win, Flames' tickets were almost impossible to get, but I had the tremendous luck to score a ticket to their home opener and see Makarov's first NHL game in person. The Flames beat the Red Wings 10-7, and Makarov looked pretty sharp considering that he had to cope with a new team, new rules, new system, and do it all in a foreign language.
What an amazing talent that man had. He could not only stickhandle in a phone booth, if you blocked the doorway he could leak out along the telephone wire — with the puck.

Good there was time! Calgary won the Stanley Cup '89, CSKA the champion of the USSR 1989. Pryakhin –the first official Soviet hockey player in NHL. Makarov became the first Russian star of NHL and won the Calder Cup! Nostalgia!

Makarov somehow made it to my favorite player status as a kid, even though he came over after the Cup win... I wore 42 as a player.
Obviously, my avatar image tips my hand as a huge fan of the KLM line... The 5 pictured together here were amazing to watch

Welcome, Makarov scoring a hat trick vs Detroit is one of the most vivid memories I have from childhood. Not sure why that one stuck with me, but long live Sergei Makarov!
I THINK the final score was 7-0... Those were the days to be a Flames fan.

I admit I was pretty stereotyped about Russia as a kid but Makarov and Tretiak changed my perspective about Russia. Love the avatar.

I remember when we used to beat teams 10 to whatever the score was regularly. I think those were the days we had guys like Mike Bullard, Hakan Loob, Joe Nieuwendyk, Lanny and Gary Roberts to name a few. In those years Mike Bullard scored 48, Roberts scored 53 Nieuwendyk 51... !!!
I think Makarov came and replaced Hakan Loob, he and Gary Roberts were a good tandem.
Roberts talks about Makarov in the following link.
Memory of '89 Flames still drives Gary Roberts

The avatar is magnificent. Pictures of the KLM+Fetisov+Kasatonov was are very popular in the USSR. I had the same photo in a school writing-book in far 1988th year)) I cut out a photo from the newspaper "Soviet Sport" and pasted on a writing-book cover. It was cool!))) And in the 1989th year on a cover there was Lanny's photo with the Cup in hands!
