Flames should trade #6 for Buffalo's #8 and #38.
Top 4 are Mackinnon, Jones and Drouin and Barkov.
After that the Next 4 are Nurse, Monahan, Lindholm and Nichuskin.
The Flames would pick Monahan with the #5 pick as Carolina likely will.
If he is gone then Buffalo would likely want to draft Nurse ahead of Edmonton.
Edmonton then either picks Lindholm or Nichuskin and Flames get the left over who will clearly be better because Edmonton will pick the wrong one.....
Edmonton might pick Risto with #7 if Nurse is gone. The hope is that Buffalo want Nurse much more than Risto.
At #38 there will be someone that the Flames will have considered when they picked #28.... Maybe Mueller or Bowey or even Petan might fall to #38.
At 38 Fucale might be on the board and then it would be okay to take the best goalie in this draft.

Hopes: Trade current roster players for another pick in the top 10 (hopefully top 5). If this can be done, then trade the 28th for a couple of 2nds so we still have three 1sts but also have two seconds.
Fears: Filling holes in the current roster by trading picks at the draft for older/established players instead of picking these kind of players up as free agents in the summer.

Hope:
Monahan, Lazar, Morrissey/Hartman
Trade Cammy to MTL for two second round picks this year. (Ryane Clowe type deal)
Fear:
We draft a goalie in the first round, or trade any of our first round picks. And I fear that the Oilers move to #5 and take Monahan before us. Kid is the next Eric Staal.

Yes. I completely agree. It is imperative we get #6 right. It will be painful to know that the oilers cashed in on flames picking the wrong guy one spot ahead of them.

Hopes: Feaster makes at least 3 picks in the first 2 rounds, including Monahan.
MacTavish doesn't make in to the podium in time and Oilers forfeit their 7th overall pick
Fears: Feaster makes trades which he feels are good value and we pick up other team's healthy scratches and college players who can't skate well.

Say what you will about the Oilers, the one thing they're good at is going up to the podium early in the first round.
My hope is that the Oilers confuse the 7 with a 1 and start trotting up there at the beginning of the draft.

Hope: McKinnon, Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm, Zykov, Gauthier (obviously not all of them, but as many as possible and in that order of preference...). Trade roster players for first/second round picks.
Fears: Defenceman not named Jones with our first pick, goaltenders anywhere in the first, trading next years first round pick.

What if it was next year's 1st rounder + Something for this years 2nd overall (if MacKinnon was still on the board)?

I hope that if the Flames can't jump up into the top 3 they just go ahead and take the 3 picks in the first round. If we can hit on 2 of the 3 first rounders it could speed the rebuild up substantially.

Hope:
#6 Monahan
#22 Rychel
#28 McCoshen
Trade Tanguay without taking back a bad contract
Fears:
Flames overpay way to much just to move up a spot or 2.
Flames trade #22 pick for Chris Stewart
With a 2-3 solid players available at #28, flames trade pick for a 2nd and 3rd round pick. Neither pick pans out.

Unrealistic hope: Nuchushkin and Monahan go in the top 5, and Barkov landing on Feaster's lap.
Realistic hope: Flames take Monahan / Lindholm with their 6th pick.
Fear: Flames take Nichushkin / Horvat with their 6th pick.

I'm not afraid of Nichuskin at all... I'm hoping for Monahan, but I'll be excited at the possibility of what Nichuskin might become if the Flames choose him.

Hopes:
Flames keep their three picks.
Flames take a combination of Lindholm, Zykov, Hartman, Gauthier, Mantha, Compher, Pulock, Morrissey, McCartney, Bailey or Bowey.
Flames move Tanguay for an extra 1st or 2nd.
Flames make deals to take on salary for extra picks in 1st and 2nd round.
All Flames picks turn into quality players.
Fears:
Flames blow the three picks and trade up to select one player, who busts hard.
Flames draft Monahan and get him to camp to find out his skating isn't good enough and he's destined to become the next Rob Niedermayer.
Flames draft a Russian who refuses to follow the development regime they ask their players to observe and he runs to the KHL.
Flames draft a goaltender in the first round and he doesn't develop into a star until he's 26, and playing for another team.
Feaster trades away our firsts for players who will not be around when the team has an honest chance at being competitive.
Feaster manages to put a team together than is horrible, but good enough to finish out of the top three picks next year.

Hope:
i) Keep all three picks - Draft all players beginning with letter M.
6) Monahan
22) Morrissey
28) McCoshen
ii) Trade all pick to get #1 or #2, draft Mackinnon
Fear:
i) Off the board picks at 6 - think Fucale or Domi or Shinkaruk, all good players just picking them higher than the consensus rankings.
ii) Goalies in the first round - stay away, analysis shows that you're nearly as likely to select a starting goalie in the later rounds than the 1st round. Plus I'm confident in Gilles and Broissoit
iii) Petan at 22 - I think he's an NHLer, but with the abundance of talent in the first round I think there's better players available at 22.

That's a tough one. I'd certainly spend the next year worried about the possibility of having given up a first overall pick (Reinhart or Ekblad) along with other assets. If we trade next years first and one of this years late first round picks I'd probably be OK with it. If we trade #6 and the 2014 1st or Baertschi and the 1st I'd be against it.

My fear is the Flames won't use the three picks and try to package them. Use the picks. Get more picks if you can.
