Having watched Reimer down the stretch and in the first round of the playoffs, I really thought the Leafs would address the real problems on their team and give Reimer another year as the starter.
FU Reimer, you're not good enough....but this guy, who is a product of a huge hype machine that was a product of a huge hype machine regarding Jonathan Quick, is better than you. Why? Because he IS. But where's the on ice proof? No...you don't get it.....he IS better.
The overreaction to how great this deal is for the Leafs is hilarious.

he was playing in front of one of the best defensive teams in the league at that point
all I am saying is that there's no telling who wins this trade for at least a year
if Bernier is a top 15 starter it's the Leafs in a landslide, if he's not than the Kings didn't downgrade in net, gained a 2nd round pick and a quality (and for a few years cheap) 3rd liner

Career save percentages in NHL: Reimer .915, Bernier .912, Scrivens .910. In AHL: Reimer .920, Bernier .927, Scrivens .923.

Really solid deal for Toronto. The pieces they gave up are easily replaceable. Kings did alright I guess. They have some extra depth in goal so they don't have to rely on Martin Jones and Frattin adds more depth to their bottom 6.

I agree with this, Bernier has looked good in the time he has played, but he hasn't carried the full weight of a team yet. Especially hasn't carried the full weight of a team in hockey crazy Toronto, how do they protect this kid from the wolves long enough for him to stand on his feet?
I think it is a good deal and one I would make if I was Toronto, but definitely not robbery.

Feaster, take notice if you are tempted to draft Fucale or any goalie in the 1st round

If I were a GM, I would NEVER draft a goaltender.

Good deal for the Leafs.
Vancouver's going to be forced to buy Luongo out, lol.

Nothing wrong with this deal from LAs perspective. They couldn't afford to sign Bernier. So they get a decent young backup cheap to replace Bernier. They get a decent 3rd/4th line guy who is also cheap, and only 25. And they get a 2nd. LA aren't in a position to be taking on contact, and teams don't throw around 1st rounders these days, so this is a solid deal for them.

I think it is a great deal for the Leafs largely on the fact that they didn't have to give barely anything up of value to get a guy that has huge potential. Throw in the fact that they have Reimer and the risk is very little for them.
Scrivens is a decent back-up but unless he takes a huge leap forward isn't going to be better than Bernier. Frattin has struggled to make the team the last two years and the Leafs have a lot of borderline top6/9 wingers already so he likely was going to be an AHL/NHL borderline guy next year for them as well. The 2nd is decent but with the choice of which year to give it up is likely going to be in the 45-55 range.
I think Bernier has shown a lot more than either Reimer or Scrivens in terms of likelihood to be a above average goalie at the NHL level, but even if he isn't it still is a very small price for the Leafs to pay to take that risk and that is why it is a great deal for them.

Frattin is a pretty good pick up. He can probably replace penner.
La will be a deep deep team again next season with more young solid wingers and a one of the best center groups.

That's a better return than the nothing that many forwards or defensemen that bust get you.

Did the Leafs really need Bernier I don't think so but in the end it really didn't cost them that much to get him.

We all know if Feaster was making the trade, the 22nd pick would be going to LA. Vast overpayment.

Where does Jonathan Bernier's career go from here? a) chance he so desperately needed & wanted & excels OR b) Next stop: #Philly - goalie wasteland OR c) gives way to Riemer as No. 1 and destined for career back up OR d) all of the above OR e) some other destiny ______

Great deal for the Leafs, gave up a lot less than Tampa gave for Bishop or Lindback; and he's likely got the better future out of the three as well. I wish Feaster would have been in on this considering it took very little to bring him over, but we already have too many cooks in the kitchen, and maybe the Kings didn't want to trade him within their own division?
I just hope Ramo and Co. prove to be capable starters in the future, but Bernier has a better chance out of all of them.

Reimer played the majority of his team's games this year, led them to the playoffs and had, arguably, better numbers than the guy that Bernier couldn't displace as a starter in LA.
He has 100 career starts, has won over half of them, and his numbers have improved as his short career has moved along.
Reimer has shown a quite a bit in those terms.

The other factor for LA is that they are a win now team. A first round pick would be nice, but they have Kopitar, Carter, Richards, Quick, Doughty as core players who are playing at a high level now. They don't need to worry about replenishing their talent yet. Bernier likely costs them 2.5 in cap next year as a minimum, to be a 20 game backup goalie. So they cut that down 1 million to get Scrivens to do that job, and add a 8-12 forward and still get a 2nd round pick.

To be fair the guy he was trying to displace is still young and just signed a 10 year extension. It's not like the Vancouver situation where Schneider the the young guy.
I just wonder what happens if he can't dethrone remier. Does he get traded again?

When I see Reimer I see a steady that that is okay behind a solid defense and will make most of the routine saves. I think he can be a 20-30th overall starting goalie in the league.
What I don't see from him is a lot of making saves he shouldn't, making big saves, stepping up at key times to bail his team out when they are playing poor and putting team on his back.
That doesn't make him terrible and steady goaltending is fine but what I have seen from Bernier is the potential to be that top 10 goalie in the league, make the big saves when needed and carry the team through so bad play when needed. Whether he is able to translate that to do it as a starter is yet to be seen but it is that extra level that he seems to have that has me place him above Reimer.
