I'm no expert, but I think you'll just experience the same thing your neighbours are. You'll just be replacing the current water with new. Once the river subsides I'd bet the water level drops a bit on it's own, especially if it's storm sewer backup and then you can start pumping...and if it is backup, then you might not need to pump at all and it'll just go down the basement drain.

No, you'll need to pump. But at this stage it's pointless. You're going to spend all day pumping the water out, think you have it done and be happy, leave because it's still an evacuation zone and come back in the morning with all the damn water back again. It would be more disheartening then anything.
The damage is done, I know the fear of mold is there but 2-3 more days isn't going to be the difference maker.
When the water starts going down, attack the problem.

Latte land aka sunnyside.
I bet bigtime would need the same and he's probably gonna need it a day or 2 before me.
bigtime is 2 blocks from me, and I'm sure there's a couple dozen others on 5th st, 4a and 4th that could use help with:
Pumps ( gas ... Electrical wont be useful)
Hauling
Fans
Dehumidifyers
Hauling junk
Clean up

As soon as you or bigtime are let back in and need some stuff moved or whatever, give me the word. You get 3 or 4 pickups down there at the same time, it will be amazing at how fast stuff starts dissapearing.

And oh, on topic. I'll be in that area as soon the evacuation order is listed helping two different buddies clear out their place. Shoot me a PM at any point if you need help, don't need Yeah_Baby sexting me if I post my cell number here.

Really appreciate all the help guys, us latte sippers are very thankful for it!
I think we won't be starting any recovery until there is confirmation that stuff pumped out of the basement is actually draining away. Not too much in our basement either, most things will go right in the garbage.
Many of 4A street residents are going to organize things like getting dumpsters and other things for the street to help make things go easier. Pretty sure every home on our block is flooded in the basements.

Good thread.
I was thinking of taking a couple days off work and coming up from Lethbridge when travel has normalized. I don't have any specialized equipment, but I can help with whatever manual labor folks might require.
Alternatively, or additionally, if a CP effort is initiated, I'd love to help.

The water has gone down enough in Discovery that pumping is working and removal of carpet and drywall has begun.
I will be doing this tomorrow and if anyone wants to get some practice in before the greater effort is required in Sunnyside, come on down.
PM and I can get you the address, or my cell to meet up.

My guess is that the city closed all the valves from the storm drain system into the river.
Storm water near the river would just sit in the pipes until the valves are reopened. When pictures were circulating of the first puddles of flooding in Sunnyside on Thursday Eve, the water was clear, i.e. it didn't come from the river.

If we run out of CPers to help, might be some other things we could do showing up here at some point.

I don't have a vehicle, but if I can get to where I'm needed, my labour is available. Now, to go clear out some space for PMs.

Wow. I wish I could be there to help. In the Flood thread I stated that I've never been prouder to be a Calgarian. People like all of you are the reason. My hat is off to all of you.

I won't be able to help today as I'm going to be helping others (family friends) but I will be able to tomorrow and so on.
