This pleases me on two levels.
1. Good for the Flames.
2. He didn't go here.
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...403/story.html
EDMONTON - When you look at the Edmonton Oilers roster, it’s easy to see they need to upgrade their defence, add some speed and grit in their bottom six and find some size, especially down the middle.
When you scan the pending NHL free-agent list, not many names jump out as automatic upgrades. It would be great to sign Jarome Iginla, Nathan Horton or David Clarkson, but the bidding for those three will be fierce and steep.
Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish has already stated he’s leery of overspending in free agency, so he’ll tread lightly in the free-agent waters.
One player that few are talking about is pending free agent Corban Knight. Don’t bother scanning the free-agent list because he isn’t on it. The Florida Panthers drafted him in the fifth round (139th) of the 2009 entry draft, but he’s spent the past four seasons developing his game at the University of North Dakota.
“I’m a two-way centreman who takes pride in both ends of the ice, but I take a lot of pride in the defensive zone,” the six-foot-two, 195-pound centreman said when asked to describe his game.

#Flames sound very confident they can sign him. If so, that's a good addition to the rather bare prospect crop between 20-25. #Flames
So now do the Flames still try to move into top 5 Or take Nichushkin with the 6th pick?

We take Florida's most valuable pending UFAs. First Bouwmeester, now Knight, just a couple more years and Huberdeau come on down!

hmmm...
This is a very good move by the Flames and Feaster et al.
Frankly, I didn't think we would get him, so one definitely has to congratulate the organization for getting it done. I hope the rumors of a contract being done are true.
Not an overpayment IMO. Doesn't matter where he was picked before, just where he would go now if he were to re-enter the draft....Based on his play, I doubt that Knight would fall past the 4th round if he went back into the draft today.
I've been quick to criticize Feaster, but this is a very good move

no to Nichushkin
Knight will be a great #3 center IMO, but Monahan is still our chance at a #1.

I love CP.
Its amusing that a 4th rounder is considered an overpayment for a 22 year old top 10 college player who just happens to be a big, 2-way center. What exactly are people expecting to get with that 4th rounder? Do you play hard ball with FLA on this and pinch them to take a 5th - is that honestly worth it?.

Trades don't work like that. Just because he was a 5th rounder doesn't mean thats his value. Thats like saying Fleury was only ever worth an 8th rounder.
This is an amazing trade and no where close to an over payment.

A 4th seems a bit high but so be it if that was the going rate. Knight is likely better than anything we would get in the 4th so it's definitely a win.

If Knight becomes a top 5 prospect in Calgary, why is the 4th rounder too much? He's worth a first round pick by all accounts.

The argument could be that if nobody else was going after him, the Flames could have gotten him for free in 2 months.
But I will admit, I'm still surprised we got as much for Erixon 5 minutes before he would go back into the draft.

Two thumbs up from me, Feaster. I think we can put this tally under one of your better moves. And building good relations with the team in the #2 position on june 30th? Makes it even more worth it. Excited to see Knight come in and help our center ranks this fall!
So what's our roster depth like now?
Stajan
Backlund
Knight
Horak?
And after the draft/offseason my hope is:
MacKinnon/Stajan
Backlund/Monahan
Knight
Horak
Exciting times.

It is an overpayment compared to getting him for free on August 15th.
It is also an overpayment if he decides to continue holding out (the Flames had 10 days to talk to him before the trade so that shouldn't happen).

Because of the lockout the day for UFA has changed from July 1st to July 5 for this season. He would normally be eligible to sign July 1st. Goes for others as well........Logan Couture has signed a new extension, but it won't be announced until July 5th.

I like it. From Pronman
Quote:
The Good: Knight is a great puck possessor who displays puck skills to go along with very good hockey sense at both ends. He may not be the flashiest player in the world, but the talent is unquestionably there and he can consistently show top-end playmaking skill as a passer. Knight is also a hard working, aware defensive player and a face off ace who drew hard assignments for North Dakota and was still one of the best offensive players in the country.
The Bad: Knight doesn’t have a glaring issue in his game other than his skating is roughly average. While he moves fine he won’t blaze past anyone.
Projection: He could be a good #2 center who logs tough minutes

If Knight wanted to be part of the Flames why didn't the Flames just wait until he becomes a UFA before signing. He is most likely getting the rookie max in either case. I suppose this is a safer bet, but seems a bit of a waste.
