Torts would probably get the Canucks playing a style of game that's harder to play against than AV but one wonders if they have enough skill to be able to score playing that style. It seemed no matter how many skilled players the Rangers brought in they had issues scoring.

Well if it's only style of play that Gillis criticized... Gillis did keep a AV and had him coach an offensive style so I assume that Gillis thinks he can and will dictate the team's style of play and Torts is capable of coaching it.
If my memory serves me correctly, weren't Tort's system fast paced and offensive minded with defensemen frequently joining the rush? That was the system he employed with the Lightning and in the first couple of years with the Rangers. With that said, I think the Canucks are trying to more of a grinding team.

Sorry for the delay - it was to the effect that under Torts NYR plays 'goalie' and not hockey, referring to their defensive style and emphasis on shot blocking. Can't find a link but team 1040 was mentioning how odd of a fit Torts style would be with Gillis' preference for an uptempo offensive team.

Could be tricky. It's one thing to drop to the ice as if you had been shot. It's another thing entirely to drop to the ice to get yourself shot.

Bizarre hire. However, there is not a coach in this league that could take the current Canucks roster and turn it into a playoff style team.
The obvious things to watch will be how the Sedins and Kesler respond to his confrontational style towards butter soft stars, the plunderous ravaging of the self-conscious Vancouver media, and the style he decides to implement. The style he coached in Tampa was markedly different than the one he coached in NY. Pre-lockout aside, Van fans will be hoping he gives that goalie style garbage a rest. It won't work with that team, nor any other team really.
Back to the media, who was that guy that gave the fifteen minute rant between sobs after Nucks got swept? Sekaras? He is in for some sore times.

I don't like Tortorella. Not a good hiring by Vancouver IMO. Stevens would have been the better hire. Glad he's in Vancouver though, his system doesn't suit the Canucks at all.

Guess I'm in the minority, but I think Torts could be good for that team if the players buy in. Looking forward to his interactions with the top-notch Vancouver media though.

Should be interesting times on the left coast for players, media, fans, etc...

Guess I'm in the minority but I think it's a great hire for the Canucks. If you're not busting your balls out there you'll sit which I think will be great for some guys on their team

Pretty desperate move by Gillis - it makes sense though given the closing window of opportunity to get a Cup - Tortorella is the best short-term hire and maybe he gets them playing a more gritty playoff-like style.
It's risky though and obvious that if it doesn't pan out in the next season or two, there will be sweeping changes in Vancouver that will probably include Gillis himself.
