Draft Pick
|
I voted Nichushkin.
For me it's a no brainer Nichushkin has more talent.
However the part of me that says we need to draft a center no matter what disagrees.

I think we should pick a talented winger and try and trade for a franchise center...

Norm!

When I look at Monahan I see a guy with a low side of a Langkow type of center who is good in all areas of the ice, and consistently puts up that 20 20 and is a strong 2nd line center, but his upside is an Yzerman type and think that makes him a strong #6 pick, but I have difficulty seeing him going later then 5th for some reason because he is such a safe high end pick.

Wow, just looked up Nurse and he's good, gonna get better. All the right qualities, 6'4/5" (depending who you believe), smart, talented, compared to Pronger in some articles. Hmmmm.

Voted for Monahan (although I don't believe Monahan will be available in reality).

Should go for the best player irrespective of position. The Flames need help at centre now, but even if the player picked at 6 is able to stick with the team, he's not likely to be a star this season.

I mostly do not want a flight risk with Nichushkin. The $ and home comfort of the KHL has become too much of a rik for me let some other GM roll the dice.
There is nothing for Nichushkin in 1 year or even 2 to say this Flames team is BS i hate it here and leave to the comfort of the KHL.
The Flames flat out can not afford that kind of risk on this crucial 6th pick.
This pick has to be as close to a sure thing than ever before.

People who are worried about taking the russian need to realize for that to happen the Flames would of have to pass on one of.
Mackinnon
Jones
Drouin
Barkov
Monahan
Lindholm
And thats very unlikely. We are guaranteed to get one of the above players. Which totally makes me giddy at the thought of one of these stud prospects will be in Flames silks.

I just don't buy into the "Flight Risk" thing at all. Flight Risks I think enter into play only when it is a player that has trouble making a roster. Instead of battling through it, they will sometimes go home. Very rarely does a Russian player prefer to play in Russia. Radulov comes to mind, and that is about it. Every other player I can think of (though I might have missed some) couldn't crack an NHL lineup.
Nichushkin I think is bound to be a superstar. SOME scouts have said he is going to be the best forward in this draft. His size and skills translate well to the NHL. He will be a beast that will be difficult for any team to contain.
I like Monahan, and I think he is going to have a very good career, but Nichushkin is just that great. Always draft BPA.
Nichushkin got out of his KHL contract (with the stipulation being that if he does not make the NHL, he plays in the KHL rather than the AHL, which is fine). He is staying here in North America to train. This guy WILL be in the NHL next season, without question. If he puts on another 15lbs or so, he will be a guy that will scare the defence out there - a big body with speed that can either make you look silly as he goes around you, or just goes right over you.

I think a "flight risk" can enter into play for other reasons. He may get stuck down on the 3rd line at some point. He could may not see powerplay time. He may not like the coach. For any of those reasons he decide at any point to go back to Russia, make as much money, not have to deal with the cultural differences and be handed a surefire role.
We've posted many lists of Russians drafted high who went back to Russia. Heck even non-Russian superstars have left the NHL to go to the KHL at some point in their career (Hasek and Jagr par example.) Not sure Nichushkin is as surefire of a superstar as you seem to think he is.

Monahan just seems like a guy that turns out to be David Legwand. Not a lot of upside but not bad either.

Monahan, but also don't think he will be there at 6.
