It sure has vocal residents, though.
Not bums. Rubbies.

I lived there (just down from octo) for about 5 years. Reasons I moved away:
- Needed bigger house than 650 sp ft.
- Lived next to an apt building owned by a total c you next Tuesday
- Being virtually trapped during rush hours
- Dinks cutting through
- Wife would tell me about the bums taking a dump in the bushes while on walks with the kids
- Bum broke in house and stole the dog
- Thought the Bow was going to overflow that one spring, wasn't fun.
- House was over 100 years old

Liked it because:
- House value did nothing but go up
- Walk to work in 20 mins, would have been much shorter if the Peace bridge was there.
- Walk to the grocery stores/restaurants/etc.
- That weird Chinese lady who owns the convenience store who has terrible English but doesn't know it.
- Great off leash area to take the dog.
Speaking of which, the two little houses next to your old place are up for sale! You can knock them both down, put in a suburb-sized house with bum-proof fencing, and move back into the neighbourhood.

I live in a decently bummy area (Bridgeland) and it totally comes and goes in waves.

3 years ago if you looked at the Calgary crime map, all you saw was markers for residential break ins all over the neighborhood. They caught that guy, now if you look over the past year there are barely any.

Especially over winter, you can go several months at a time without seeing a bum.

Once in a while you get a group of them that decides it's a quiet place to hang out and not get hassled, and you see a bunch of bums per week.

It also really depends on policing. I was talking to a cop and they had "Operation Firewall" a while back where the cops basically tried to hassle all the bums into hanging out downtown instead of the surrounding neighborhoods. Then they had some clean up downtown initiative, and they hassled all the bums downtown and they went back to the neighborhoods. I think they are doing the opposite again.

I think I went the entire winter withought seeing a homeless person besides our regular bottle picker (not sure if he's homeless or not). Now that the weather's gotten nice I've probably seen 3 sets in the last month walking down 1st Ave.

As long as they aren't pooping in my bushes (have been lucky there so far) it's not a huge issue for me. The worst encounter I've had with a homeless person in the neighborhood is them interrupting my conversation so they can ask for a cigarette.

Has the media picked up on this yet? If not, I'm going to preemptively complain about how every little group of moaners seems to be able to get a puff piece on the news these days. And rarely do these pieces give a balanced take on the issue - just that of the complainers. Just wait for it.

I first heard this on Monday in the Herald article about Rocky Ridge wanting to start using pace cars to slow traffic down there. It was a little paragraph at the bottom about it.

I've seen nothing in the community about this yet.

Yeah you could have it all for $2million dollars! haha. Even Iginla got out of Sunnyside.

My dream neighborhood now is parkdale right off crowchild. that or the full acre lots in Dalhousie. It used to be Varsity Village, which is where i live now but effing hate the traffic that market mall produces.

I am intrigued by your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Could said 'bum-proof' fencing also be used to pen them in a cage?

There is only one really bad part about Sunnyside.

People bypassing Memorial Drive.

Hey, just thinking about something someone else said in the SSP listing thread regarding inner city trams: what we should do is restore the historic trolley-line that used to run down 2nd and 7th aves and up the hill to centre street. The trolleys would essentially become pace cars on the avenue, the smooth speed of the trolley would reduce latte spills compared to the bus, and the rest of the city would hate us even more for our mustachioed hipster trolley-drivers.
