My point is, that your point about Rutherford resonating with "rural" voters could be important in a city election.

I was being facetious (hence the cool glasses).
I know there are a lot of rural types who move to Calgary, but they're typically more educated and cosmopolitan than those who stay in rural areas. I would presume that most of the Rutherford vote would come (as stated earlier) from crotchety old people afraid of change and foreigners.

Yep. I think a lot of the 40+ crowd were blindsided by Nenshi getting all the support from younger voters that came out in larger than normal numbers for the demographic. I can see a lot of the 40+ votes going into an 'anything but Nenshi' vote for Rutherford.
I know I would be on the fence as I don't see Nenshi as a disaster but it's been more of the same in city hall and I haven't really seen major results from any of his promises.
I would certainly be all ears to what Rutherford feels he can offer.

Ah, sorry...
I am not sure I agree, I think there is a large segment (I hope I am wrong BTW), that will agree with this thougths/viewpoints.
Time will tell I guess.

Since when are city taxes a big deal?
I dunno maybe someone who has had their life significantly impacted by the paltry amount we pay in municipal taxes can enlighten me.

I find this potential news odd, I would have always thought Rutherford would go for Provincial politics.
Oh well, the purple army needed something to do this year.

Just bring up a discussion regarding the Flames looking for arena funding and they will all come out of the woodwork.

I would say a bill for $3400 in property taxes on a normal home significantly impacts my life, even if it pales in comparison to the $36,000 I pay to the Federal and Provincial governments every year in taxes.
I dislike dismissing throwing money around just because it's 10% of the rest that I pay and calling it paltry. Wasn't it St. Nenshi himself that once said 'if you take care of the ('paltry') pennies, the dollars take care of themselves?'

Yeah it's a real shame paying those property taxes, I wouldn't mind it so much if all those foreigners and socialists and poverty-ridden scum weren't using my damn sidewalks and roads.

Rutherford probably doesn't even know what a hoverboard is. And even if he does, it probably thinks they work on water.

Or those city managers voting themselves raises?
Does anyone have a number as to how much city taxes have increased since Nenshi has been mayor? It has to be a fairly significant number...25%?

Are there no prisions? Are the union workhouses closed? Let them go there. And get off our damn sidewalks.

You should always take everything anonymous strangers say on the internet seriously, especially me.
I am deathly serious and am a paragon of internet virtue, and would never use massive hyperbole to amuse myself.

The leftist elitism shows itself yet again and Rutherford hasnt even thrown in his hat, or even said anything about any policy ideas he has and people wonder why the NDP and Liberals dont win all the time.
Or yah know, he is catering to a group of voters who doesnt believe in Nenshi's style urbanism and density driven growth (its not just developers) in a city that isnt restrained by geography. But no, all those ideas that are different than Nenshi's are crazzzzzy and only idiots who didnt finish high school would vote for someone like that
If people think that Rutherford would be a pushover candidate then I suggest you follow politics more closely. My bet is he doesnt even run, but if he does it will likely be Nenshi v Rutherford with a couple of also rans who dont get any more than a handful of votes. Betting odds at the moment would favour Nenshi but they also favoured McIver at this time before the last election.
Would Nenshi have won the last election if Higgins hadnt entered the race? I dont know but it would have been a heck of alot closer.
Does shifting money to the airport tunnel from what could have gone to initial planning for the SE LRT hurt Nenshi with 1/7ish of the cities voters who are likely realizing unless Santa Redford opens up the cookie jar that its likely not getting built for another 15-20 years minimum.
