Drouin seems tailor made for Tampa and after the Radulov and Kostitsyn insanity would the Preds really want to go all in on another Russian? Carolina I'll buy.

Weisbrod is also starting to increase the value of our late first round picks. This type of interview will create all sorts of media chatter, and talk around the likelihood of these late first rounders becoming impact players. Subtle play, but a good one.

Because this kid is a lot better and a lot bigger than Sven was at that age.

Someone at nhl.com thought enough of his comments to write a story.

I've never been to Moose Jaw but I can tell you I'd rather play junior hockey in Calgary.

Disagree. I think part of the job of the scouting staff is to try and figure out what other teams are thinking and will do. This allows them to make more informed decisions about moving up/down and which players will go where.

You don't think the Flames care which way COL, FLA, TB, NSH and CAR are leaning? Any info that they can find out through newspapers or interviews is useful to their job.

I think you underestimate how much teams are trying to figure out about other teams intentions. If anything Weisbrod may spread misinformation in order to keep their true intentions hidden.

Red Wings Scout says Jones, MacKinnon and Drouin are NOT heads and shoulders above everyone else:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/blogpost.htm?id=18033
Quote:
I think it's real deep draft," McDonnell told NHL.com. "We just finished up our year-end meetings [on May 26] and know we're going to get a player if we're picking in the 18th spot or lower. We think we're going to get a real good player no matter where we're picking in the first round." One would think stocking up on defense might be the way to go for the Red Wings. But there's always room for another goal-scorer, even if young players Nyquist, Damien Brunner, Calle Jarnkrok and Tomas Tatar are making their case to assume that role in the near future.

McDonnell said he believes forwards are the strength of this year's draft.

"You have your few high-end defensemen Seth Jones, Darnell Nurse and Nikita Zadorov, but overall I think it's a forward group," McDonnell said. "It's almost a what-are-you-looking-for type of draft. What do you need, and just pick one. I especially think that's the case for a team in the top 10. The players available are all so close and tight … even when you get past the top three, the list goes on and on."

McDonnell was quick to point out that though Jones of the Portland Winterhawks and Halifax Mooseheads teammates Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin are exceptional talents, they aren't heads and shoulders ahead of other players in this year's class.

"I wouldn't say the top three are miles ahead of everyone else," McDonnell said. "It's a tight group from No. 3 to No. 15 … it could be anybody. It's a good year if you have a certain need; there's probably someone there for you."

You don't think other GMs are smart enough to realize that's the case? Even more reason to disregard what other team's management says in the media.

If they want to know the intentions of their peers, NHL brass have a lot of other sources of information besides the media.

Not if you just want information from/about the combine. General draft talk will just clutter it up and make it hard for people who want info about the combine to find same.

Yeah easy to say for scouts of a team that never get to draft talent like that. I bet if the Detroit scouts got the chance once in a while to be seriously considering top 5 talents as a draft choice, they would be changing their tune

Nice write up on the top ranked collegiate player Brett Pesce(and only college player invited to the combine):

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=6...site-Draft2013
Quote:
"He's one of the best defenders I've seen at his draft age in a long, long time," Central Scouting's David Gregory told NHL.com. "He does a great job keeping the puck to the outside and when you think you're by him, he uses his stick and body positioning as well as anybody."

The 6-foot-2.75, 170-pound righty-shooting defenseman played 38 games for the Wildcats this season and posted one goal and six points. He also finished sixth on the team with a plus-7 rating. But those statistics don't even tell half the story.

"He's been impressive all year long," Gregory said. "He walked into a program that traditionally doesn't play freshmen. I'm not talking just sitting on the bench, either -- because this is a team that doesn't even dress freshmen. But he was given more ice time as the year progressed and was used in very important situations for them. He had a tremendous season."

The hard work didn't go unnoticed. Pesce was ranked No. 40 on NHL Central Scouting's final list of the top draft-eligible North American skaters. Now he's here at the NHL Scouting Combine, hoping to make a lasting impression.

"I had to earn my spot," Pesce told NHL.com. "In the beginning of the year, I wasn't getting as much playing time as I usually had in the past, but [associate coach] Jim Tortorella taught me a lot and really helped step up my game. Toward the end of the year, he was giving me time on the penalty kill and 5-on-5. I'm thankful for that."

i disapprove of what you say, but i shall defend to the death your right to opportunistically use the word granularity.
