While that's true, I doubt many parents would throw up their hands and say have at 'er. As a parent I still wouldn't allow it. I have a teenage son myself, so i can speak with good experience about how hard it is to protect them, but you still have to try.

Alright everyone calm down.

Can't we just all agree that it makes perfect sense to discriminate against a whole group of individuals, based on the fear that a few of them may do inappropriate things when left unsupervised?

Come to think of it, when you say it like that it doesn't sound all that sensical.
I may have to give this some more thought.

Has a single person in this thread said that homosexual boys should not be allowed in the Boy Scouts?

Explicitly? No.

But when I read people say things along the lines of, I think they should let gays in, but you know....they may have a point that maybe they should be thinking twice about letting boys sleep together in the same tent if some of them might be gay, well, then I start to think that sounds an awful lot like a duck.

I assure you that I am neither a duck nor a homophobe, and that I'm not speaking in code when I say that I think gays should be allowed into the Boy Scouts both as members and as adult leaders. It's just that, whereas we usually just have to tell the anti-equality crowd to mind their own business, for once, I see an issue on the other side of the debate that we pro-gay rights people might actually need to address.

GRAPEVINE, Texas -- Local leaders of the Boy Scouts of America voted Thursday to ease a divisive ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted into the nation's leading youth organization -- one of the most dramatic moves the organization has made in a century.
Gay adults will remain barred from serving as Scout leaders.

Lol

There's nothing wrong with gay people as long as they don't ram it down your throat, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth when they do that

But on a serious not they are just people like everyone else and should be allowed to do what they want

Sometimes you make your age painfully obvious with ridiculous immaturity

This is one of those times

I hope you're not referring to me, because self-control has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. Two 13 year olds who are attracted to each other would have nothing that they would need to control, but their parents may wish to stop them from doing anything out of a belief that 13 is too young for anyone to be sexually active, whether they're straight or not.
Oy... *shakes head* First of all, your parents were definitely prudes.

You do realize that the biggest issue that parents are concerned about with teen sex is an unwanted teenage pregnancy, right? It's a little different when there's no chance of that happening.

Not to get into a debate about the prevalence of STDs among 13 year old boys, but there's not a whole lot to discuss outside of using protection, and the mental and emotional maturity of the kid in question. If the kids feel like their ready for sex, they will usually do it, whether they are actually really ready or not. You will never ever stop them if they've decided to engage in sexual acts...they will find a way.

That being said, most gay kids are somewhat confused by their sexuality during adolescence, or still in the closet/ashamed of their sexuality because groups like the boy scouts haven't allowed them to be open and honest about who they are and never allow them to feel normal. This means they are less likely to "feel ready" for sex until much later than the average heterosexual kid. BTW, that isn't intended to be a blanket statement, obviously there are confident and openly sexual gay adolescents too.

I had a debate with a woman not long ago telling me that she would never have her preteen/teenage girl get an HPV vaccine (to protect against an STD that is so prevalent that nearly everyone carries it asymptomatically, and having it for a female leads to a significant risk of cervical cancer), because she was certain that she knew everything she was doing, even when she wasn't around her all the time. I was stunned at how obtuse she could be, but needless to say I found out recently her teenage girl now has an HPV infection. Yay mom...

Here's the point. You cannot control human behaviour, you can only guide it. The only way to help someone make the right choice for themselves is to educate and guide them to think their way through it and come to the best decision for themselves. Empowering young people to make intelligent decisions will usually result in good decisions. Of course, everyone will still make mistakes now and then, but hopefully they learn from it if they are thinking critically.

Here's the other point. It's time to stop making them feel like second class citizens. Time to try a little love, empathy, and understanding...for a change.

Nothing wrong with allowing Gay boys into the Boy Scouts if they want to, really how big of a deal is this. I don't think there are many 6-12 year old boys that openly say hey you know what I am gay.
The enrollment for scouts drops off significantly after 13 anyways.

As for this notion...

huh. There was a time where most boys were in the Boy Scouts at some age level.
At least that was the case in my generation and defiantly my Dad's.

Sour, eh? You know what could cure that? Fruit. Pineapple, in particular. I suggest the next time you are canoodling with a gentleman, that you offer them a nice fruit plate first.
