I’ve been thinking more about this and here are my thoughts for a proposed approach.

I will sim sets of 10 games using a number of scenarios, involving changes to the sim engine.

I will post the results of those sets – for everyone to review. Regular season standings, scoring leaders, etc. I think the regular season is the best judge of the sim as the sample size is large enough. 7 game playoff series are simply not long enough to make a judgement on.

Everyone can then rank which scenarios they prefer, and we can see if we can come to some consensus on that basis.

Sounds good to me.

Another thought I had was around who sims. I'm not sure if its just me but over the past 2 seasons it seems to me that game trends are different when flambers sims vs Grant. Got me to thinkig that maybe some of the randomness is derived from a machine key or something like that...anyone have a similar observation or am I just imagining it?

It's not something I've noted - though I think I probably simmed around 80% of the games this season so it may be tougher to detect any variance.
Really though there shouldn't be any difference on the basis of who is simming.

Agreed, not sure why it would be different.... as the SIM setting are set when the season starts, its the same roster file, same engine, same sim file etc.....

Yeah, I might just be seeing something that is not there...for some reason i thought that Flambers sim'd gamed tended to be more 'upsets' with more scoring.

Given the requirement to randomize in the SIM I wouldn't be shocked to find out some things were seeded by the environment.

Having been a commish in another sim league years ago I wanted to offer my 2 cents... now rounded up to a nickel

One thing that a number of sim leagues have is an engine that all the gm's have access to. So they can actually sim games on their own and essentially develop an element of "practice"

I recall test simming dozens of games "practicing" my lines in preparation for a playoff series. It definitely gave a feel like an element of coaching or on ice team management was in effect.

I am not sure if this is something we could institute in our current league structure or not.

Through practice sims you can find some of the holes in your team. You can play around with your sliders to see what best suits your team without piling up official losses. You can see if your pk needs better personnel... etc etc

From a scientific approach testing the result before would add stability.

In the one sim league I am in we have had a couple people quit because they were frustrated at the results. They did have a pretty good roster that deserved better. Also one guy gutted his roster for a rebuild yet he was a top 10 team and Tomas Holmstrom was top 10 in scoring.

The season we just finished however was better and it seemed that the good teams had success.

Regarding Ovechkin...

One that came to mind was when Dave mentioned Ovie. He is a great player but where has he been the last couple years of the NHL? He has been horrible.

I am not sure your definition of 'horrible' is consistent with mine.
