Of those I'd give Joey MacDonald a one way contract. McGratton a two way and Begin another camp try out.
I'm not sure about Taylor, Cervenka and Carson but the rest can walk.
We'll have Ferland, Turner Elson and Ortio probably returning to the Heat and new players such as Hanowski, Ramage, Granlund, Wotherspoon, and Brossoit that we will have to make room for.
|
What in the world has Steve Begin done to convince you he deserves even another tryout?

Yeah I'm not so sure why everyone is so willing to cast Nemisz aside. He is still young and I'd say he deserves another contract to get back on track. Fact of the matter is you do still need to fill a team in the AHL and he's a guy that can do that.

So many posters on here want to throw out the baby with the bath water. They know next to nothing about the young players on the farm. Yet they want to get rid of almost everyone without thought to the fact that they still have to staff an AHL team next year.

Leland Irving received a 2nd and 3rd contract from Feaster after his ELC (in fact he got a substantial raise in his AHL salary); suggests to me the GM is patient and willing to give prospects more than just 3 years to prove themselves
I think Nemisz will be re-signed

Occasionally GM's need to make a gamble on a player to get a value contract that pays off when the team has a shot to win. I think Brodie might be a guy that you try that with. See if you can lock him up for 5 years at 2.5 per year. Sutter did that with Regehr in 2003, and the result was a very team friendly contract. The Blackhawks gave Duncan Keith a 4 year 7.5 million extension before he had played a full season in the NHL. Keith was arguably their best player that final year ofthat contract.

Nemisz is a half PPG player over two of three seasons in the AHL who, to this point in his career, is most remembered for being on a team with Taylor Hall and Cam Fowler. He was invisible at the WJHC, he has always had skating issues, and he has one point in 15 NHL games. He is a previous regime's first round bust, who arguably should've never been taken, and certainly not over John Carlson.
Like Irving, he has been given his shot. He hasn't taken advantage of it. The same issues he had when he was drafted are the issues he has now. That's not a player you need to retain.

I qualify Butler, but I try to trade him for a pick in this year's draft -- whatever we can get. We have some strong D prospects going pro next season like Tyler Wotherspoon -- who looks to be another Brodie-esque mid-round steal. I don't want Butler getting in the way of their development. Butler has clearly topped out.
Not too concerned with Byron, a serviceable AHLer / depth forward -- but doesn't have the size to be a true utility guy.
Nemisz has really fallen off the map. Thinking his days in the organization might be numbered.

So because of my user name I have no right to an opinion ? Also I didn't specify Nemisz, I was referring to those that want to get rid of half of Abbotsford.

Granlund won't come over next season, his contract at HIFK was extended for another year IIRC.

If you qualify a player and he accepts the Qualifying Offer, you've signed him. Considering Butler is unlikely to get more than $1.2M on the open market, there's a good chance he accepts the QO.

This.
Would rather have a guy at the 5-6 spot who can step up his play and show some intensity like Andrew Ference.

Then put together a large pr campaign about him and trade him.
Either way you move him at the draft.

I agree with the OP though, most of RFAs that need to be re-signed/qualified are pretty clear cut. Though, I think a bit more patience with Nemisz would be good. Also, Bancks seems like a good guy for the Heat.

Bold I would like qualified resigned, Red are who Feaster will likely also resign.
I would love the Flames to walk away from both Byron and Butler or send Butler to the AHL/ 7th D men only.
Brady Lamb not the high NCAA hopes they built him up to be hey.
“Brady is a physical defenceman who eliminates time and space down low in the defensive zone and finishes his checks,” stated Flames general manager Jay Feaster. “He has good vision, a hard shot from the point that he gets through traffic, makes quick decisions with the puck, and makes a good first pass. He has consistently demonstrated strong leadership abilities, and he is a hard-nosed competitor. His work ethic and the way in which he competes have been his calling card throughout his career. We are pleased to welcome him to our organization.”

That sucks. What does that mean going forward? I thought i read that he had to sign with the flames by July or he would be back in the draft.
