was super excited when we got him, never worked out here...even this year he has been better but not the top guy I expected.

Enjoy your money you didn't earn

It's not his fault, but the Bouwmeester signing was one of several moves over a six month period in 2009 (starting with the Jokinen trade) that looked great at the time but that ultimately turned the hottest team in the NHL into a perennial non-playoff team.

I don't have anything against him and really give him a lot of credit for turning it around this season, but it's hard to get too sentimental about the Bouwmeester era.

He was better than a lot gave him credit for. What fantastic skating and mobility.

With his skating and passing skills, and forward-like checking skills, I always thought the Flames should have tried moving him up to play centre - like Paul Reinhart

I don't think anyone has ever slighted him for his mobility and skating, truly he has elite skills in those areas but he is a gong show in every other area outside of 20 games this season. He was much better jumping up this year but his defensive zone coverage was still average at best.

Good riddance

And that's a good move if you can acquire something from nothing. If there was a guarantee that the next guy the Flames pick off waivers can be converted into a 5th a couple games later, that's a benefit. The Flames did acquire a 1st and 2 prospects for an asset they didn't surrender assets for (though you could argue that owner money is an asset...if you so choose). Darryl Sutter did an excellent job acquiring Bouwmeester for virtually nothing (drop in a few spots in the draft, which from the sounds of things did no impact his drafting plans, and the rights to Leopold, who had no intention of staying here).

Did Bouwmeester under perform? Under Sutter, I think that's a fair assessment. But that's why I bring the context of the coaches into it. The Bouwmeester we expected is the Bouwmeester that Hartley gave us. He's the 4th forward. That's why I wonder how much of the issue was misuse and how much was Bouwmeester's level of comfort in Calgary as a whole. Under Hartley, I think there's a bit of evidence to suggest that Sutter was at least part of the reason Bouwmeester wasn't achieving what we had expected from him.
