I grew up playing in Okotoks so we had the pleasure of playing the reservation teams all the time. It was terrifying, they always seemed to have one guy that was rocking a full moustache at 12, and stood 6'-4" without skates on.
I was always concerned heading in except for one year when we had a team that was all goon all day, and we could go toe to toe with the thuggery. I can remember one game that featured fights in the stands, fights in the hallways, and fights on the ice. We were written up as a disgrace to Okotoks, had to change our name from the Okotoks Chiefs, and were told to stop emulating guys from Slapshot.
Our coach was a real piece of work that year. He had his nipple bit off in a bar fight at the Cecil a few years prior to taking up coaching, so it wasn't like he was all that upset at what we were doing.
Best year of hockey I ever played, which was coincidentally Bantam C. Looking back I can see how this happens. Guy on ice throws a cheapshot, parent yells at him calling him a POS, other parent in stands yells "that's my son so F you" and it's game on.

I would be curious to see what percentage the WHL players did spring hockey or other types of stats like that.
|
Im going to say that 90% of the players that get drafted into the WHL this spring have played spring hockey, and likely closer to 98%. Every player in the projected top 100 has played spring hockey.

Kainai Nation. I'll never forget that game until the day I die.
That was the same year we played Lomond, lost 14-0, but filled 2 1/2 scoresheets up with penalties. We were losing 8-0 after the first and my coach told us that this game was henceforth going to be our "do whatever the f--- you want game". He literally told us to go nuts, do whatever, and led us out of the dressing room yelling "stick em f--- em, let em know you're there!!!" We were all huge slapshot fans, so naturally our top line took the ice at the same time, skated around the rink, and all stooped at center ice simultaneously. The goonery ensued at that point.
Lomond was the #1 team in the league, but after that display they wouldn't play us again, including playoffs (which we obviously didn't make, but whatever).
I miss minor hockey like that sometimes.

I can't disagree with what he said, the part about the burn out is the most worrisome, you often see Junior aged players leaving the game. The game still has to be fun no matter what. I will bet that Red Deers first 6 draft picks, at least will be kids who played spring hockey. I will be following the WHL draft very close this year and be we'll see how Red Deer picks.
The part about being athletes is interesting. I believe and have seen first hand that the best hockey players could be some of the best in whatever sport they they choose, what kids are taught in hockey easily translates into other sports.

And what kids learn in other sports translates into Hockey.
Hopefully Hockey Alberta will gain some control of the srping teams.

Happens all the time, parents paying for their own kids only to be financing the ringers.

Meh, seen a lot worst, and a brawl is more than 2-3 people slugging it out IMO.

I can't think of a sport where most of the money, time and heartbreak is completely unregulated. This is capitalism at its best."
Kagan hesitates for moment.
"And its worst."

Well I'm 34 so I'm not far behind but I grew up around there and knew a lot of the Lomond, Enchant, Vauxhall kids. In my day Lomond kicked a lot of a$$ because of the Beagle boys.

Yeah, I am the same age as you, and this parents brawling in the stands thing, wasn't that uncommon. We used to think it was completely awesome when the dads started kicking those big metal garbage cans around, and throwing hay makers, all over crappy PeeWee hockey.
But Old School dads were definitely a different breed. They were all old Man strengthy, looked 50 by today's standards when they were really in their mid 30's, and smelt like musty leather and Players Filter all the time. Think of 20 or so Ron Swansons watching a game, in crappy late 70's early 80's polyester suits. When I wander in to the Old Lake Bonavista Arena all those awesome old memories come back.

Then as per tradition, they then took their kids to Chuck E Cheese and kicked each others a$$es between the pinball machine and the ball pit

I loved hockey as a kid (still do), but it was nice to have some time off during the summer to be a kid and hang out with non-hockey playing friends. Finish up the year and then spend a month or 2 riding bikes, playing outside, playing street hockey, going camping and then a month or so before the season starts up again head to hockey school and get ready.
