Why NHL 94? The original game was NHLPA hockey (93).
Wrap around for the win.
Nope there was one from 92 no "PA" though. Just had numbers but no player names, was still awsome for its time, way better then Ice Hockey and a little better then Blades of Steel.

Anyone remember Mutant League Hockey on Genesis? If stuff wasn't going your way you could just kill or maim the other team until they had to forfeit from lack of players lol.

I will give it credit though. I have it on my tablet through an emulator and I do enjoy playing it from time to time. Definitely has that "arcade" feel to it.
I think part of what made NHL 94 great was the little details that they missed in later games. Things like having each team's actual goal song when they scored (Whalers Brass Bonanza anyone?) and also organ music that was actually played in each building.
Plus, things like if you were in San Jose and they were on a power play the fans would do the Shark motion with their arms while they played the jaws theme. It's little things like that which they could obviously do today but don't.

92 had the league license, so it had the teams and logos, but just the numbers for the players. 93 had the NHLPA license, but not the league, so it had the players' names and pictures, but didn't have the team names or logos.
94 was the first game to be jointly licensed and had everything.

Playing the Tourny/Playoff mode in NHLPA 93, over and over and over...always trying to do the wrap-around goal where the goalie would get stuck on the far post.
NHL 94 was just all around cool.
NHL 95 with trades and the NHL Commish approving/disapproving...also the seemingly random choosing of year end awards with the blinking finalist screen.
NHL 96 and the 2 Unlimited soundtrack.
NHL 97 for PC with Beezer on the cover (only goalie cover in NA that I can recall), the Goalie Mask viewer (with the actual masks being worn in the game), game faces.
NHL 98 was the first one I had for the Playstation. Remember hooking it up to the hotel room TV on New Years and playing it all the way to the morning of Jan 1, 98.
NHL 99 and its terrible framerate, but you could do an expansion draft with the Preds.
NHL 2003, Jarome on the cover, but not a great game.
NHL 2004 was AMAZING. I remember playing it non-stop.
Then NHL 07, probably the last really cool innovative year for this series (skill-stick).
Ever since then, the series has really declined in well-thought-out and executed innovations and stagnated with AI. I get way more frustrated with the newer games than I enjoy them. Too bad, it's the only series of games I have bought every year since 1992.

My memory is very hazy. But i do believe there were a few NHL players in the game. Could be wrong but thought some guys were in there. The rest were made up names.
A friend and I would stay up late and play. I remembering writing things down on paper. I forget why, but i think we might have been recording playoff series or keeping track of stats.
Very fuzzy memory. I would not he surprised if the above paragraph proves to be completely false.
Ashamed to admit it, but I was too young to know better and always played with Vancouver in NHL 94. Cliff Ronning and Trevor Linden were an unstoppable foce. Linden would always score with a slapshot from the halfboards, perfectly in between the blue line and the hashmarks.
A little useless fighting facts about NHL Hockey (original) / 93 / 94:
'92 was awesome because you could fight even AFTER the whistle. They removed that in '93 and above.
'93 was my personal favorite because it was the one that really started it all between my friends and I. AND of course when you pumped someone in a fight blood would spill onto the ice - what an amazing feature ! That and if you played Rangers / Wings, the epic tilts between Domi and Probert were a plenty!
'94 sadly, was where the blood spill was removed. That's why while the game did have more features I actually preferred '93 more. Didn't like that the rawness was removed.
Oh and I remember the back of the '94 box for Genesis, I think a selling feature was an added fan who would come up to the glass once in a while. Hahaha... this fan looked a lot like Raiden from Mortal Kombat if I recall.
