When I heard the skit on 960 this morning I was thinking we could offer 7 years 49 million. This is a huge overpayment.

Same cap hit as Eric Staal. Elite #1 Center on a team that wont spend to the cap.

Wow 8.25 AAV? I didn't know his name was Crosby.
Teams still finding ways to pay out ridiculous amounts of money.

If he was a winger, he wouldn't get this money.
But if you look around the league, it's a fair dollar amount.

The whole "build through the draft or UFA" argument is a little off target, I think. You build winning teams by acquiring players whose value on the ice exceeds their cost. The easiest way to do that is through the draft. The hardest way (at least for top end players) is free agency.
So your general point is accurate, but it argues a false absolute. When you look at the roster of any Cup winning team, there is a good mixture of own draft picks, astute trade acquisitions and free agents.
The real question here is whether Getzlaf would have been a good free agent signing at the cost. That is a question that applies equally to Calgary in the hypothetical as it does Anahiem in the practical.

He's in that league, Better than Ovie and maybe Staal, maybe.

Sure, I can't argue that. All teams have to supplement their weaknesses; I said build through the draft and not FA, not never sign a FA or never make a trade. The starting point to start building is the draft, thats all.

I think it's about exactly right for a centre of his calibre. Iginla was making $7 million per year for the past several seasons and is a less rare commodity given he is a winger. Then consider salary inflation since Iginla became a $7 milliion player, and $8.25 million doesn't seem too out of line for a 1st line centre in his prime. It's certainly better value than the contracts we offered to O'Reilly or Richards.

He's having a good season so far but don't forget last year he had 11 goals, the previous two seasons he ended up with 19 goals each.

Wow... 12% of their cap on one player. He didn't take a discount, that's for sure.

Saskatchewan Roughriders and receiver Chris Getzlaf have agreed on a three year contract extension. The deal is said to be worth in the neighbourhood of 120-thousand a year.

In his 19 goal year he had 76 points in 67 games, and year before that 69 points in 66 games.
Last year was his really only bad year. He's a playmaking center that makes the guys on his wings a lot better, and in playoffs his play doesn't fade. Very big reason Perry hit the 50 goal mark
Getz is an elite #1 center.

Goals aren't everything.
He makes everyone around him better, is solid defensively and produces over a point per game.

Probably used Eric Staal as a comparison. Big, elite #1C, also being the captain.
