I have already discussed this and have made the decision - if they trade away the 1st to win now, I am cancelling my seasons tickets - and I will make it very clear to the organization as to why.

That's right: I will give them a stern talking to!

On the original topic: Jonathan Drouin is this year's riser, the player whose stock keeps increasing leading up to the draft (sort of like Huberdeau a couple years back). He could end up going 1st overall, but will go top 3 for sure and could very well be the best player in the draft, but if you are picking 1st you probably have to go with MacKinnon.

The Oilers were stupid to take Hall over Seguin and though Drouin is probably the most talented player you probably still have to go MacKinnon 1st.

The Flames will probably pick around No. 9 - a guy like Hunter Shinkaruk seems likely - guys like Lindholm and Monahan will be gone by then.

Dream scenario: Flames get the 1st or 2nd pick and end up trading to get two of the top 3 picks (sort of like the canucks in 1999). Take linemates Drouin and MacKinnon, and you've just set your entire franchise back up for the post-Iginla years (sort of like Toews and Kane in Chicago).

Won't happen but sure would be nice. Both those players are going to be special. This is a good year to be picking near the top, probably any of the top 5-7 will end up being better players than last years top pick Yakupov.

Which young player ? It's time to draft out own young players like most top teams do.

In theory I would trade the pick for a young player if the right one came along...go look at past drafts and how many 1st rounders don't pan out

Not saying they should just I would be okay with it for a young player

If he does I would want him fired on the spot. Just hang on to our damn picks and if anything try to pick up a few more.

Mike Cammalleri for a 1st round to Boston
Alex Tanguay for a 1st rounder to Pittsburgh
Jackman, Begin, Comeaus for 5-7th rounders etc

I think those are two guys that can both get us a 1st from a desperate team at the deadline and a good way to both lose cap and pick up some more picks.

it's true that there is risk with draft picks.

And I could live with trading say a 13-15th overall for the right young player.

But there is a VERY real chance that we will have a lottery pick this year and that is a completely different kettle of fish

I haven't seen enough of any of the players personally to know who is best, but all I care is that they stay away from any Russians with their 1st pick. Way too much of a gamble these days with the KHL around and this new generation getting whiny/home-sick after a few years. Just say no to Nichushkin and Barkov (even if he is supposedly Finnish). I would've passed on Yakupov for the same reason... I'd bet a sizable amount on him being an ex-Oiler by 25, and out of the NHL by 30.

2nd round and on....sure take, the gamble.

Boston and Pittsburgh are within spitting distance of the cap. We need something coming back.

Boston has 10+ mil in cap space

The Pens have 8.6 mil

maybe I just don't think the Flames will have a top 5 pick...they have games in hand and will go on a bit of a run when kipper comes back I bet

So you would want him fired if he traded our 1st for Crosby or Stamkos?

I'm all for it.

But I think Cammalleri will have more value next year when he is a pure rental. His contract will be a hindrance this year unless the Flames eat some of it

So, you're predicting Kipper to Chicago for their first rounder?

I thought about tangs to Pitt and it does make sense, granted my line of thought was a second and a middling prospect, but its the right kind of fit. Tangs can go and make terrible passes to Sid!
