Late to the party on this one, but he is injured and well miss the entire year. The Jays needed the roster spot. Sucks for Copper, but sometimes it is how the cookie crumbles.

It looks even better considering so many starters are in the WBC right now - Reyes, Encarnacion, Arencibia, Dickey that I've noticed so far tonight in the USA v Dominican Repuplic game.

-Lawrie will start the first week of the season on the DL. He has a rib injury that sounds like it will need a week or two to mend. Izturis and DeRosa will share the starting role likely.
-Josh Johnson goes to 4-0 this spring and looks like a stud (i know it's spring). He struck out 8 and gave up just one walk yesterday in 5 1/3. That was just the first walk given up by Johnson this spring by the way. Also, the Jays seem to hit well with him on the mound, scoring 30 runs in the last two games he has pitched.
-Gibbons liked what he saw of Arencibia catching Dickey's knuckleball in the WBC. He said yesterday that based on that J.P. and Henry Blanco will both catch Dickey going forward.
-Casey Janssen struck out all 3 hitters that he faced and looks to be ready to continue as the team's closer.

Makes sense for JP to open as the catcher even with Dickey on the mound. The way he is swinging the bat right now..he has to play.

Anyone care to explain why they are adamant at sticking with Romero as the #5 starter even though the spring numbers heavily favor Happ?
I realize they are paying Romero a ton of money but he needs to get his confidence back somehow and I don't think pitching in the majors will help him with that.

Looks like a lot of potential question marks on the offense are having some pretty good Springs (Lind, Arencibia, Cabrera and Bonifacio) apart from Rasmus.

I can understand loyalty if it's just based off results. Spring training numbers are basically useless and you shouldn't ever lose a job based on them.
But the entire spring we've heard how his mechanics are off and now he's revamping his mechanics. The Blue Jays are all in this year - let Romero try and figure things out in AAA and call him up if things go well. The 5th starter only pitches a couple of times in April anyways with all the breaks they have.

Thank god, this move makes too much sense. I am a big fan of Romero, have been for years, simply couldn't have him start the season as the #5 starter in his current state. Not with the "all-in" mindset the Jays are currently in.

While I like Romero, he better not bitch about this move. He left them no other choice.

Still amazed that Wells got that contract from JP.
Even more impressed that AA found someone to take it without paying at least half of it.

I believe in the Jays.

Well hopefully Romero can figure something out down there, its highly likely the Jays will need him at some point this season. Maybe a month or two away from the pressure where he can just work on things without worrying about his ERA will help him.

Smart move. Ricky needs to simplify his game and just start throwing strikes again. Happ has looked fine in ST, and deserves the spot. If he falters, hopefully Romero will have figured his game out.

Phillies v Blue Jays on SN right now. Bautista hit a 1st inning dinger to put the Jays up 1-0.
