It wasn't just that goal though. He looked horrible for the 5 minutes on either side of that goal, leading to the very fair Dallas announcer to remark that he could defend better from the booth than what Irving was doing.
We won the game so he deserves the next start, but not all of the criticism is about that goal.

I think Irving has looked shakey at best, but from a coaching perspective, I like announcing it right away if they are going with Irving. Maybe give him some confidence to relax a bit out there, cause he looks tight.

Lol I cant believe some of you are actually comparing Irvings Numbers to Kippers and saying he's played better. Sure from a purely numbers standpoint you can deny that; however, their are many more factors that you need to take into account.
1. Kipper didn't have a training camp and didn't play during the lockout.
2. When the season first started, this team was still learning a new system and had to adjust (still are)
3. Irving lets a lot of softies in and goals he should probably stop. Kipper pretty much stops the ones hes supposed to every time.
4. Kipper is one of the best goalies in the league, comparing him to Irving is just silly. Even at his age.

As long as he keeps getting wins and/or points, keep trotting him out there.
Need to see what we potentially have with this kid, and need to see if he gets more comfy in the crease with more minutes played.

Aaannnd...if i didn't buy a new throwback jersey last night AND if I wasn't sitting to the left of my buddy AND if I didn't have a Keith's followed by 2 Budweiser's they also would have definitely lost.

Not every goalies is Mikka Kiprusoff. In fact, very few have earned the privilege to hold his jock. The days of seeing highlight reel saves on a period by period basis are soon to be in the rear view mirror for flames fans. We have been spoiled by watching an all-time goaltender for the past decade. People need to temper their expectations or they're going to be sorely dissapointed by our goaltending for years to come. Kipper is the best goaltender this team has ever seen and it's not even close.

He did? Cujo came in relief in Game 3, in the Sarich on Marleau game, but I don't remember him starting in that series or getting a 3-0 win in any playoff game.

Irving is a rookie, gotta temper your criticism based on that.

I really doubt it's just that. When Iginla made the mistake in the Minnesota game you were asking for a GIF and whining how awful he is. If Roman Horak made that same turnover I am willing to bet you would be preaching how unlucky and bad of a bounce it was and Horak should not be to blame.
What I think it is is unrighteous bias. So many people are caught up in the young players movement that they will do anything to defend them and do the opposite towards any veterans.
Irving is a rookie yes, but right now he has been put into a position to be our starting goaltender and he needs to be treated like any other starting goaltender would. He needs to be held accountable for his mistakes just like any other player.

Why? As long as he keeps winning he can start every single game before Kipper returns.
Unlike some people on here i don't cheer for the Flames to lose.

San Jose Sharks
Kiprusoff moved to North America in 1999, joining the Sharks American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Kentucky Thoroughblades. He finished fourth in the league with a 2.48 GAA and was the starting goaltender for team PlanetUSA at the 2000 AHL All-Star Game as he helped Kentucky win its first division title.[2] He began the 2000–01 season with Kentucky where he posted a record of 19–9–6 with two shutouts in 39 games.[1] He started his second consecutive AHL All-Star game before earning a recall to the Sharks on March 5, 2001.[2] He earned his first NHL win on March 29, 7–4 over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, in relief of starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.[4] He made his first start on April 8, again against Anaheim, and earned his second win.[2]
The flu sidelined Nabokov for game four of the Sharks 2001 Stanley Cup playoff series against the St. Louis Blues. Making only his second career start, Kiprusoff made 39 saves in a 3–2 victory.[5] In doing so, he became the first Finnish born goaltender to win an NHL playoff game.[2] Kiprusoff struggled to start the 2001–02 NHL season and was sent to the Cleveland Barons on a conditioning assignment after playing in only four of the Sharks first 21 games.[6] He was named the AHL player of the week during the assignment after winning all four games he played in Cleveland.[2] He finished the season with a 7–6–1 record for the Sharks,[1] and recorded his first NHL shutout in a 6–0 win over the Florida Panthers on January 5, 2002.[7]
Nabokov entered the 2002–03 season as a holdout player without a contract, giving Kiprusoff a chance to become the starter.[8] Kiprusoff struggled, losing his first three games and posting a 5.65 GAA in that time, forcing the Sharks hand as they quickly agreed to terms with Nabokov.[9] Relegated to the backup role, Kiprusoff continued to struggle, winning just five of 22 games played before his season ended with a knee injury.[10] Despite his poor season, the Sharks offered him a new contract for one year at US$800,000.[11]
|
Just want to point out that Kipper was a decent goalie when he first broke into the league. Decent record with a 7-6-1. Irving maybe in the same boat as when Kipper first played in the NHL except on two totally different teams.

Yes I remember he never started but I'm definitely mixing things up a bit. Down 3 0 and CuJo came in early in the game and then didn't allow a goal in a 4 3 win. I just recall there being a fair bit of chatter afterwards about who would start the next game. Of course it was without a doubt Kiprusoff.
Thanks for pointing that out! (nothing more to see here... )

Spending $1 on someone who will have no role on this team and is just taking up playing time - even practice time or a bench spot - for one of the younger goalies in our system and is a waste of money. Classic Flames ownership move.

Great news and smart move by Hartley to name his starter a day before the game.

Even if I agreed with you about this, then it would be a good thing that the Flames are not sacrificing a valuable roster spot at the expense of one or two prospect's development. Danny Taylor is not a Flames prospect. He is a journeyman AHL goalie who was signed to an AHL contract with the Abbotsford Heat, and was in the right place at the right time to receive a short-term deal in an emergency platoon situation for the Flames.

Except this wasn't a "Flames ownership move". This was a decision made by Flames management, and I reckon that it was almost certainly not made in consultation with the owners.
