Actually, Nash wasn't the consensus #1 at all.

Process of elimination keeps directing me to Jarmo Kakalainen, but can't confirm it yet. #CBJ very close with somebody at this hour.

The BJs have three picks in the first round this draft. Rangers', Kings', and their own. 6, 7, and 12th overall if the draft was today. That'd be nice.

Kopitar.
There was something there. It's just that like most NHL scouting staff, the Jackets were too lazy to find Slovenia in an Atlas.

I would do the job for free.
I'd buy JD dinner, and not just soup, a meal!

I was being facetious. Obviously I would take a job like that. It would be extremely difficult to turn this team around in the near future. I hope whoever takes this job makes sure they have a good understanding of the expectations and the timeline for that.

With the assets Columbus has right now, 4-7 years.
With three first rounders, they will be in a position similar to the st.louis blues in 2007 when they drafted Lars Eller, Ian cole, and David Perron. It should start them up nicely in what is reportedly a deep draft with a high top end.

That is nice. The new GM could be walking into a great situation if the ownership does not want to rush things. They have a good group of young d-men. I think Columbus will be last in the league which would give them the ability to draft MacKinnon. They could take the other 2 first rounders and move up the draft. They would need a goalie to take the reigns until Oscar Dansk was ready. In 4-5 years that team could be sweet.

Amazed that he was left in to coordinated the biggest trade in Jackets history with Nash only be let go a handful of NHL games later.

Can't believe it took this long. LOL
JD and crew must be wanting sweeping changes, and really, they're a team that desperately needs it.

JD and Jarmo Kekalainen did a great job restock the cupboard in St. Louis. That possibility was the biggest reason I wanted JD here to replace King.
If Kekalainen is their next GM, the Jackets will be in good hands

I'm not sure about Kekalainen. He did a pretty good job, of scouting in St. Louis, but his eye for talent doesn't necessarily mean he's a good negotiator. He's probably better off as an assistant GM from my impression from the draft special a few years back. I'd put a guy like Burke #1 on my list. He simply doesn't dump assets. But I guess with 3 1st rounders this year, a talent evaluator with a more intricate knowledge of this years' prospects is someone they're looking to.

An upside to this is that if that trade turns out badly for them it is all blamed on a guy who is not in the organization anymore, and they move forward

They can't afford to lose on purpose for three years like the Oilers. They don't have a die hard fanbase and they can't afford to have any fans lose interest. They have to try and win games while rebuilding the team
The crazy thing is, I bet the Blue Jackets pull it off.

JD is there to help with the business/negotiating aspect though, Kekalainen will handle all the player side of things.
Hard to bring in a guy like Burke who will want full control with Davidson already there.

Kopitar was playing junior hockey in Sweeden in his draft year. You do have to wonder if he was a Sweedish born player would he have gone higher?

I should send in my resume for the job. With JD running the show, it would basically have my contact information on it and a simple line underneath:
Will do what I'm told and not make decisions.
I would get the job on the spot :P
