Really have no idea why he's been this bad. His decision making is usually pretty good but he's been awful all year.

Gio is working hard but he is not getting results. He has had alot of bad plays up the boards and break out passes not making it clean to breaking forwards.

My opinion about Gio is that he has been over rated because of one very good year...and hence expectations are too high for him...sort of like Dion Phaneuf was.

I think he is playing at his potential now...and should not be a top pairing. Past injury or not, I just don't see Gio getting back to the form that we saw from him that one year.

I also think he is better suited for a defensive system like B Sutter's and don't think he has the wheels to do as well in Hartley's system.

Everyone has too high an expectation of him. He is not your top pair of D, I take Brodie over him, day in and day out. Having said that he is solid as the 2nd pair.

Gio >>> Butler

Gio has a $4M plus long term contract with an NTC. People's expectations aren't too high. At that price tag, a D-man either needs to be an effective PP specialist, a key shutdown guy, or a well rounded player that should at the very least be effective playing anywhere in your top 4. Gio is more the latter and he hasn't been particularly effective so far this year or in the back half of last year. It's actually fairly concerning.

Could it be that Gio is infact playing the same but we don't view him as our #1 simply due to the re-emergence of Jbo?

Is Gio being pushed down the depth chart by JBo and Wiedman?

No. His play isn't simply worse in relativity to his peers, his play is flat out worse over the past calendar year than it had been in the past, significantly worse.

Potentially this year it's due to the fact he's playing more top pairing minutes and he's simply not good enough to do so, but that doesn't really explain last years problems.

I think Hartley should put Giordano and Sarich back together. They always had great chemistry and that can't be taught. The sum of the parts between those 2 is great than the individual.

If that doesn't work, then make a change of scenery is needed.

I think it is the system. Gio is better in a "defensive system" and if you were to put him back in a system with a more defensive structure, he would perform as he was last year (and before).

He has been awful on both ends of the ice. He used to walk the blue line, and get shots through. Now he thinks hes Dion, teeing up awful shots, and making bad decisions with the puck. He needs to be removed from the power play, and ice time needs to be scaled back.

Gio is struggling with playing harder minutes, and it's impacting his offensive output.

If he can't be a top pairing d-man for us, he becomes expendable as Butler, Wideman and Brodie are all strong 2nd pairing d-men.

So, are we pronouncing Gio as "Joe" now?

Aside from that, Giordano has looked like a 3/4 d-man to me - and I would echo the thoughts that he is a defensive defenceman being asked to play in an more agressive offensive situation.

IMO he's making JBo better this year, he is very responsible defensively which is allowing Bouwmeester to produce offensively. That said he has been making some brutal give aways as well. He's a smart player however, and I'm not worried about him at all. He will pick up his game

This... Gio has a few weaknesses in his game that get exploited playing bigger minutes. I've thought that for a long time... but probably due to lack of depth, this is where he is now. Wideman would get exploited too if he were there... Put Gio back on the 2nd pairing and he'll be just fine, too bad there is nobody to take the top pairing role. (Butler?)

And there we have an even deeper problem. Gio is struggling playing with more responsibility, more ice time and in an aggressive system. Unfortunately, it's hard to put him back in a #3 type role considering Wideman and Brodie make the second pairing and Bouwmeester is better off with a solid partner.

Would be pretty awesome to have pairings of
Unknown - Bouwmeester
Brodie - Wideman
Gio - Sarich
Smith

Who knew we would be wanting a top pairing LD?

I have been hot and cold with my opinion on Gio this season, mostly cold just his play. I wouldn't mind Feaster seeing what is out there for offers. For the right deal i think they should consider moving him while he still has value. His game is starting to really slip.

I won't post much in this thread after I say this. But I have been soured on Gio since last season. His play has taken a turn in the wrong direction. He used to hit and block a ridiculous amount of shots but now when he tries to block shots he ends up screening the goalie. Happened so much last year and this year it doesn't even look like he is trying to block shots.

If anyone should be traded now it should be Gio.

He was brutal against the sharks last night. Loved his game last couple of years, but this year, he has been below average - Maybe due to the lockout? I would caution against a knee-jerk trade reaction. I'm betting and hoping he finds his game sooner than later. If he can get back to form, the flames would be looking pretty good.
