In the most basic of replies, the other three members of my group were proposing rescue selection criteria, and I was shooting them down convincingly enough to make at least one other person doubt it, thus blocking a majority vote as well.

For instance, the very first thing that was suggested by two of our group was that the two who have kids (Helen and John) automatically go first because they have kids. No other reason whatsoever, but that they simply had children. Period.

I was trying to convince folks into a random-ish method (such as alphabetical, etc) but all my other groups members deemed that method "unfair". I probably could have convinced them had I had a bit more time.

What's the point of this twisted exercise? This premise is flawed in the first place and is based on saving lives on the basis of making prejudicial personal judgments of character and worth to society. That's not the primary consideration when performing any kind of rescue or medical triage.

That's the answer right there. This entire exercise was designed to show my unit how each person's perceptions shape their decisions...and to make us aware of that (most folks likely won't be) so that, when we are performing our duties, we can keep in mind that we are to be helping, regardless of what our personal bias' are.

Personally speaking, I would have set the scenario up differently (the rescue scenario is often dictated by the victim's ability to fend for themselves in a triage manner, for instance) but I didn't set the exercise up, I just participated in it.
