Hmm, your temptation has become reality

I'm assuming once a team declares they are taking the penalty they can't take it back. Otherwise the firefighters were just not smart as once they realized they couldn't paddle as well as the other teams they ought to have headed back and used an hour or two of that 4 hour penalty to go digging for the clue.
Also can't for the life of me understand why all the teams were knocking down the sand castle with their hands. Put the bucket over the sand castle, slide the bucket and scoop up, dig a bit for the clue, top up the bucket as needed and put the sand castle back down. Would have saved them a whole heck of a lot of time and work.
But a good, physically tough first leg. And Bora Bora is gorgeous.

I was thinking the same thing about the firefighters going back and finishing. Other than honoring their word, why not do everything you can to stay alive? By the way they seemed to formally declare they were quitting, it might be something that you're not allowed to change your mind about.
A lot of them seemed to just knock down the castle, expecting the clue to be in the castle, rather than digging into the sand, so I think that was another problem they were having. One of the first teams they showed started out by scooping the sand from the castle right into the bucket, which would have saved a little bit of time, but it looked like most teams didn't figure that out.
Judging by the preview, they stay in Bora Bora next week, so I don't see any way that the final two teams can possibly catch up to the pack after starting at least four hours behind. They don't usually have a travel or hours-of-operation bottleneck when they stay in the same location for two episodes.

My wife and I totally misinterpreted this advert for the opening show... I thought it meant that three teams were eliminated, as in they quit the race because of something like dehydration or were injured or just didn't want to go on. Kinda disappointed to hear that they just didn't finish the Sand Castles part. Losing three teams on the first leg of the race would have made the show incredibly interesting.

The Hockey Players seemed to be cool under fire...and surprised that the one doctor was so flustered, youd think both of them would be very cool under fire as well.

I'm sure that's exactly what they wanted you to think. It's not interesting if they say "there's a task so annoying that three teams chose to take a four hour penalty sitting on a tropical beach rather than completing it".
After seeing the preview of the sandcastle task, and the "three teams quit" promo, it happened exactly as I expected it to. I was starting to think that they were going to be at it so long that the sun was going to set and they'd all be forced to quit.

Dat mullet is glorious.
I'm cheering for the mullet this game. Well those and the hockey players of course.
I also have to say though, the two hot girls who are currently in last place will also be cheered for. Definitely ahead of the two YouTube fruits and the other couple that is in 9th, what a bunch of pretentious ****s.

I'd assume that once a team has been given the next clue rather than completing the task to get it they already have the penalty time. The firefighters were just done in by their inability to figure out how to row an outrigger canoe. Hint: lean towards the outrigger, not away from it.

Yup as soon as they took the clue they accepted the penalty.
The smart thing would have been to let the other two teams take the clues and the penalties first and then laugh and change your mind and try to beat them through the challenge.
Its not like you need to form alliances or be popular to win this game. You just have to make sure that you reach the turnarounds before the teams that hate you.

Good lord those two were idiots, how they let people on like this I don't get. Well I do, they need the people that the audience can just shake their head at and feel better about. But really why go on a show that you know you are going to have to face your debilitating fear in. Every year there is a team that is scared of water\heights\animals or something and sure enough they have to come face to face with that fear. I am just waiting for the team that is scared of flying......
