Frankly I would much rather they do that. I hate that tipping is almost considered a social obligation rather then a optional charge. As far as I'm concerned I shouldn't have to tip for merely average service... that should be built into the wage and I should (and would) tip for exceptional service. I do tip because that's not the way the world works but it just seems silly that I need feel obligated to do so.

It's just dishonesty in pricing if the price is artificially lower because of a psuedo-optional third party service subsidy.

a non-story, imo. Lots of people don't tip. The employee clearly violated company policy.

I think a lot of the hysteria - maybe all of it - can be linked to the fact that the story originated on reddit, a site that is notoriously anti-religion and particularly anti-Christian. Check out r/atheism.

I would have thought that the religious would be all over the concept of punishing social malcontents by public shaming.

I concur.

I guess it's a bit different for the states than it is here since tipped employees only get a $3-4/ hour cash wage.

In Alberta you get min wage of 9.75/hr and tips are on top of that.

And then you can go to Applebees and get two entrees and an appetizer for $20 and here it would cost you $50. The cost of living isn't even close so the wage isn't a fair comparison.

Being religious is not an excuse to be a POS and applebees deserves all of the blowback it gets.

hypothetically, if you got takeout at Applebees, should you be expected to tip?

3 pages and no crack about the potential of Canadihenman instead posting a Costco receipt online, sans jiffy marker, thus getting the desired result of the tyrant of a Costco door checker fired as a result?

Should Canadians be expected to tip as much as Americans when the min wage for a server can be 2.5-3x as much per hour?

I don't really want to start this argument, but just wondering.

If a server works 40 hours a week for a year (which most often don't) they make like $18000. Try living in Calgary on $18000.

I've never been a server so I don't really have bias, but it's a ####ty job and they make #### all. Unless they outright do a bad job, tip them the standard.

I feel kinda sorry for Applebee's.

They fired the waitress, got backlash from the public
If they dont fire the waitress, they will get backlash from the public from allowing the receipt to be posted

I'm surprised there isnt more of a backlash on that Pastor who started this by stiffing a waitress and coming back wanting to have the whole restaurant staff fired.

I don't see any problem with what the waitress did.

The customer is an ass. She was an idiot, she's exactly why educated people are atheists and why religion should burn in the fiery pits of hell.

Applebee's was caught in the crossfire. I would've preferred that they stood by their employee and told the pastor to pound sand. However, firing the worker is well within their rights as well for "disrespecting" a customer.

All in all, it just shows what the service industry as a whole has to deal with (and not just food service). Hopefully it makes people a bit more aware that the person serving you is actually a human being.

I want to go to that pastors church and when they pass around that thing to collect money I will throw in a note, saying "I give Applebee's waitresses 18%, why should God get any? He brought me the wrong drink."
