Such a strange story, but awesome work by Deadspin to back check everything and bring this to light.

Te'o has released a statement:

Quote:
"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.

I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.

In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."

^^ Armstrong is probably the happiest guy right now, hearing about this story.

I know its been mentioned already, but Deadspin is so underrated IMO. A nice, fresh view on sports journalism.

Lots of weirdness about this one. Based on the deadspin timeline they posted, there were meetings between the 2 of them according to the father and Manti himself based on the media reports.

I wouldn't be surprised if this got even weirder like "creating a fake relationship to cover up gay love affair".

This is one of the articles referenced in the deadspin report. Pretty weird to read it now, and lots of things that are going to be hard to explain if he decides to continue his story about being the victim:

so 'we met' now means "online"? There's a Notre Dame press conference going on right now, anyone have ESPN?

He has been quoted as saying that she was "the most beautiful girl I've ever met."

And if we're being realistic about it, he is in a long distance relationship and has never used Skype? Come on now.

He continually refers to her as "my girlfriend" and not by her name. That's a pretty big red flag too.

I'm strangely fascinated by this whole story. It's easy to sit back and shake my head at it, but much like the Lance Armstrong ordeal, I feel bad for everyone that was emotionally invested in it.

The more I listen to AD Jack Swarbrick's press conference, the more I feel so sad for Te'o. For any person or persons to dupe somebody like this is just sickening. Not only to lie but to make up a death on the same day of his Grandmother dying. I mean who does something like that?

It'll be interesting to see if ND or the Te'os press any charges against the perpetrators.

That's a pretty common expression. I wouldn't read much into that.

I am watching too, but can't believe any of what this guy is saying. I have zero doubt Manti is involved.

Did they meet on the holodeck?

And Manti Te'o is convinced the beautiful stranger will be watching too Saturday, somehow.

Lennay Kekua was a Stanford student and Cardinal football fan when the two exchanged glances, handshakes and phone numbers that fateful weekend three seasons ago.

I highly doubt he is going to press charges against himself

Zero doubt huh. You must have information that other people don't have then? Jack Swarbrick wouldn't have put his neck out like that if he didn't have all the facts and details of what actually happened.

The only thing Manti can be accused of is being naive and too trustworthy, as ridiculous as that sounds but that's the society we live in.

Again I just can't help but feel bad for Manti. How embarrassed and disgusted he must feel right now.
