Gamecenter is useless for Flames fans that live locally, blackouts are ridiculous.

In the op's notice it says the auto renewal is on the 21st, but the first game is the 20th...I'm assuming they're showing it, and just trusting the charge will go through the next day?

The first week is usually free anyway I think.

They're not ridiculous. You can watch games on television.

It protects the team's lucrative regional TV deals. Those deals would be worth much less if the NHL opened it up with no blackouts.

I understand why the regional deals are important and lucrative, but I don't like having to buy a bunch of nonsense just to get one particular product. Especially when that same product is available to others in a more direct, efficient, and affordable manner. The league still makes money off of subscriptions, and eventually (hopefully) the potential revenue from subscriptions can offset the revenue from the traditional cable deals as that delivery method continues to die off.

Live sports is one of the few remaining products that the cable companies can use to tie you to an old fashioned cable package. Other television shows and movies are all legally available a la carte through iTunes, Netflix, etc., so I can see why people get frustrated when artificial barriers are put up to protect an old business model.

Yep, and not to mention the plethora of Pawn Stars spin-offs. What's next, the museum guy? Maybe the guy that inspects signatures. Terrible.

I'm not sure if it's up at all yet.

Just read this page, they said the new gamecenter app would be released tomorrow for phones and tablets so maybe we will get it for 360 as well.

Not too sure how reliable it is but yeah.

What if you don't want to pay $70 a month to essentially have access to Sportsnet and TSN to watch hockey? Isn't that what Gamecenter is supposed to provide?

Lucrative local TV be damned, price Gamecenter to provide access to all games and share that revenue to the teams of who people are watching. Hell, charge companies to advertise on it and use that for revenue as well or else show Sportsnet ads and negotiate similar deals.

Ultimate bottom line is that the NHL should say to regional broadcasters that there will be no blackouts unless the broadcasters offer an option to watch the game live on the internet through their own site.

Thanks for the link. 99% doing this and cancelling my cable. Since I don't live in Calgary, it's pretty much a no-brainer right?

I didn't have the a great experience with the PS3 app. When it worked it was great, but many times it would randomly jump back 10-20 seconds in the middle of a game.

Hmm. The super sports package here is about 33$ each month so this is by far better financially.

Can anyone with experience with this comment on the video quality? As long as it isn't a significant drop off from hd I will go with it on my 50" plasma.

the quality is top notch if you have a good connection. You can choose the quality - 3000 kbps is the best available. I usually watch it with my 40" TV, it's fantastic.

Last time I used the PS3 app it was a steaming POS.

Hopefully it's better now.

I plug my laptop into my 40" via HDMI, and the picture is just as good (or better) than the Sportsnet HD signal (using the highest quality video in Gamcentre).

Wasn't there talk that this would be free as a "thank you fans" ?

Kind of bummed... oh well. I'm in auto-renewal so oh well.

Your points are valid but a little backwards. Most of the basic cable channels are basically free and it is the sports channels everyone is paying for. It is the people who don't watch sports that have the biggest beef.

Sports teams will try to resist standalone offerings of streaming as long as possible since they are the massive beneficiaries of getting every cable subscriber to pay for their programming. To sell the channel only to the people who wanted to watch it and still bring in the same revenue, they'd have to sell their channel for 50 to 100 a month. In some American cases it would be more like 400 a month.

I deleted a few posts that dealt with circumventing the broadcast policies put in place by the NHL. I know we allow some discussion in other threads about ways of getting a different IP address. However because this site would not exist without the NHL and the Flames, we really don't want that kind of discussion here.

Edit- just to add.... general discussion is alright. So for example saying that using VPN or a proxy can change your location. However we do not want specifics; like how to do it or sites to visit.

That's a flimsy excuse on their part. They could learn how to simsub region specific advertising into the streamed feeds.
