Caught the flu back in December on the second day of a new job, not much coughing but I was running a wicked fever that I kept in control by double dosing on Advil cold and sinus. Since everyone at work has been dropping like flies since early December and I got better before Christmas, I'm hoping I'm immune at this point.

And in case anybody needs further incentive to go- Safeway gives a whack of Airmiles if you use them to get a shot. Or at least last year when we got our shots before our trip; we got something 100 Airmiles per shot.

I have this right now and for the past two weeks. Trust me, if there is anything that you can do to prevent feeling like this, do it. Seriously this is the 3rd worse I've ever been sick and the other two times could've killed me had they been any worse, so trust me get a flu shot.

I know this is a very stupid question but does the flu vaccine work against all flus or do some still suffer from flus even with the shot?

Congrats, you now have a super power of sorts. We had two swine flu people in our workplace 2 years ago, and they never get sick anymore. The hell swine flu sufferers went through, has a massive payoff. This isn't bs either. Apparently they are studying this effect as a possible flu super vaccine.

Yes, you can still get the flu.

Can I get seasonal flu even though I got a flu vaccine this year?

Yes. The ability of flu vaccine to protect a person depends on two things: 1) the age and health status of the person getting vaccinated, and 2) the similarity or “match” between the virus strains in the vaccine and those circulating in the community. If the viruses in the vaccine and the influenza viruses circulating in the community are closely matched, vaccine effectiveness is higher. If they are not closely matched, vaccine effectiveness can be reduced. However, it’s important to remember that even when the viruses are not closely matched, the vaccine can still protect many people and prevent flu-related complications. Such protection is possible because antibodies made in response to the vaccine can provide some protection (called cross-protection) against different, but related strains of influenza viruses.

Interesting. I was one of the lucky swine flu catchers.

I think since then (3 years ago?) I have been "fever" sick once.

I have noticed though on a number of occasions that when I started to get the classic early signs of a good old fashioned bout of the flu, when I went to bed I fully expected to wake up feeling like ass. Only to wake up feeling like a million bucks.

I think I'm going to save some vials of my blood and market it as a super soldier serum.

Each season's flu vaccine is targeted at 2 to 3 strains of influenza virus that surveillance teams have identified as the likely ones that will hit in a particular season. Sometimes they guess wrong. Since it takes such a long time to manufacture a vaccine, there isn't time to correct if they do guess incorrectly.

Even when they get it right, you could still get sick. All the vaccine does is trigger your immune system. If the response isn't strong enough, you could still be susceptible.

Yeah, I think I am going to get vaccinated just in case. I can't say for sure if what I had over the holidays was the flu or not. I shake a lot of hands every week, and it makes me nervous. Half of our office is suffering with this right now.

Thanks for the tips. I am gonna hit London Drugs in the AM.

i figured i'd post this in here becuz it's on topic.... (sorry if it's been mentioned before, i don't feel like reading all the posts in this thread)

my wife was kind enough to give me her flu right after christmas and i'm still fighting it off - uggghhh.

the stupid thing decided to set up camp in my sinus/nasal cavity. i have been feeling pretty good for the last while except that i am sooooo congested!!

i was talking to my aunt on the weekend and she said something like, 'you should try NeilMed sinus rinse to clean out your sinuses.'

i mentioned this to my wife and she says something like, ' i think i bought one of those!' sure enough we had one so i thought i'd give it a try since my eyes had been sore for a couple of days from all the built up pressure in my sinus cavity (mind you, that pain could also have been from the concussion i got on thursday playing hockey, but i digress)

so here's what you do....

warm up some water, put it in to the dispenser, add some of the ‘powder stuff’ to the bottle and mix (basically creating a very strong saline solution).

you open your mouth, breath out and squirt this crap up one of your nostrils. the solution goes up the one nostril and out either the other nostril or your mouth. it’s freakin’ DISGUSTING!!!! I swear what first came out of (thankfully) my nostril had a pulse… this massive pile of yellow/orange/green mucus!!! then you switch and do the other nostril and then repeat the entire process again. the worst is when the solution comes out your mouth - it tastes like a mixture of saltwater and snot - yuck!!!!!!

so anyways, I did the nostril flush thing sunday around lunch and by 12:30 the pressure had totally eased up on my eyes - so it works!!! i did it again this morning and have felt really good all day

yea - it's gross, but it works

here's a link to their webpage... http://www.neilmed.com/can/sinusrinse_isotonic.php

**oh... i'm not sure what the videos show, but if it's anything like what i experienced you probably don't want to watch them if you're eating!

Coworker in the office next to me called in sick today with flu like symptoms... looks like I will be making a pit stop after work to get the vaccine. Should have been done a month ago it seems.

Pretty sure I had swine flu 3 years ago. I was so bloody sick I couldn't bend my knees or arms (joints hurt too much) and was completely bedridden for 3 days. I actually thought I might die. After thinking about it I haven't been sick since.....not even a cold. Which is awesome, because now I have more "sick days" to use after hockey games!! In fact, I see a dark Monday coming up here.

Tell them to bugger off home. A pregnant woman in our office refused to work anywhere near someone that showed up sick. She made a bit of a fuss about it, saying it was completely irresponsible and idiotic for the person to show up- agree with her 100%
