After thinking about it, what was Iggy supposed to say? If he hadn't said "I still want to be a Flame," the speculation and media would be crippling to this team.
In typical Iginla fashion, he said the right thing and put his team's wellbeing ahead of himself.

Exactly. This is standard fare in negotiations. Not much to be read into it at this point.

Well, Gaudreau just wins Championships everywhere he goes. He won the USHL as a rookie; won the NCAA as a freshman; won the World Juniors his first time on the team. So, I expect him to turn pro next year and win the Calder Cup as an AHL rookie next season, then make the jump and win the Cup as an NHL rookie.
He'll be this generation's Fleury to Iginla's Lanny (Sven will be the new Loob, but he won't leave North America after winning the Cup, so the Flames will win more than one).
Oh, blind faith and wild-ass speculations...How I missed you.

he could have said he hasnt thought about it yet, hes just focusing on the season, focusing on training camp, let negotiations happen down the road, any other standard aloof answer.

If Kipper leaves the Flames are a lottery team.
If Kipper leaves then why sign Iggy? He should win a cup. Wanting him to stay here is just selfish. I just want him to win a cup and it won't happen here.

Dream scenario:
6 - 6 - 4.25 - 3 = 4.81 cap hit
Iggy knows how close the team is to the cap and takes a discount. He doesn't need to uproot his family. He retires a Flame and is assured a job within the organization after he retires. Yes, I know he would get a bunch more as a UFA.

Well, we've paid him more than enough. Honestly, he will go where the money is, and that's that. The lock-out shows that these guys have no loyalty.

This really is not new news. Iggy has always said that he would like to be a flame for life but that is as long as he thinks the flames have a chance to win. If Iggy plays half the year and figures this team has no chance of winning in the next 4 years he will probably want to leave. He would have signed an extension on July 1st if all he wanted in life was to finish his career in Clagary with winning a cup a 2nd choice.

Watching Iggy do his thing in this short season can't wait but an angry Jarome is never a disappointment.

Before the lockout, I believed that they were going to wait to see what the new financial system was going to look like, then make a deal before the puck drops on the season. I'll stand by that prediction now.
4 year deal with a $6M cap hit (7,6,6,5) announced late next week.

I can see that or something similar happening.

I would like to see him sigend a year at a time but that doesnt make sense for him. Over the next 4 years after this one I would suspect we get 2 more 30 goal years and then tail off to the 20 to 25 mark for the last 2 years. So if 30 goals is worth somewhere around 5 - 7 million and 20 goals seems to be worth around 4 milion. Somewhere around a 4 year 20 million deal seams quite fair.

Guaranteed?
He won't score 30 this year. Unless something drastic changes he isn't going to score 30 next year. You can expect the guy to continue to be a top 20 goal scorer as he gets older. It's not unreasonable for him to be scoring 20+ a year and making between 3-4 a season.
If anything Iginla taking a discount on his contract would help the flames out in a big way by leaving the team salary cap room to hopefully get other players in here that can be key contributers.

I wonder why he won't score 30 this season?
I only expect 1 player to break 30 goals this season.

To be clearer. I don't see him breaking the 30 mark again in his career even in a full 82 game season. I think it's unreasonable to expect that of him. We've seen similar players in Sakic, Yzerman, Modano, and the list goes on that all had similar if not worse drops in production. I still put him as a player who can at will score 20-25 goals in a decent year though. I just don't think it's reasonable for Flames' fans to expect him to continue to score as a top 15 forward as he gets older and older.
Still want to see him crack 600 as a flame. It will cement his place in the hockey hall of fame, cup or no cup.

If Iginla retired this afternoon he'd be in the HOF first ballot.

I sure like Iginla however if I were GM I would have reservations on paying for the past verse investing in the future.
Retire a Flame under reasonable salary... 4.5 to 5 million with a max 4 year fits that bill IMO. Even as I type that, I do believe he MUST have a productive season in what is looking to be nothing more than a mad dash to the playoffs.
Any slump or slow start by him will be devastating not only to the team but also his leverage for future value.
Iggy on a contract year... unleash the beast! Heck yes wanna see it.
