but why?

You're 21, go under your parents insurance and save $3000.

Seriously, I'm 22 and am on my dad's insurance for my 2006 Cobalt (which we bought new), and we pay around $1000 for a year. I know a '06 Cobalt and a '12 Scion aren't the same, but my rate the day I bought the Cobalt (under my dad's insurance) was still only $2300.

2007 Honda Civic SI, 20 thousand KM per year, full coverage. $1300 per year. TD Meloche Monex.

My house insurance is pretty cheap though, since I coupled it with my car insurance. It's only $350 a year.

How long does it take for a typical speeding ticket to "clear" off your driving record?

In Alberta, it's two years from the conviction date: http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/2172.htm

The conviction date is the day the fine was paid, not the date of the offence.

I always thought this was the case, but I just turned 25 in October, and phoned MelocheMonnex, and they said it was already "built in" or something and my premiums wouldn't be going down, so I'm paying the same price as I am when I first went with them at 22. What gives?

I will be shopping around shortly as I'm currently at $120/month and Kanetix shows me some cheaper places.

I think the hitting 25 thing isn't as much of a factor now that GDLs are around. I really don't understand how it works though.

My insurance dropped quite a bit when I turned 25 as it allowed me to go on my Company group plan. Turning 25 is still a factor for some discounts.

That's for dermerits. For the purposes of insurance companies, they stay on for 3 years.

I think the drop in premiums come from driving for 7 years, not when you turn 25. My insurance dropped basically in half when my girlfriend hit 7 years of driving last year.

Not entirely sure if this is true for all companies, but we have Desjardins and its the 7 year rule. Probably to offset all the people who are starting to drive much later in the lives.

The tickets actually will stay on your record for a three year period and accidents for six years.

I'm sure it would be much lower in Alberta.
There was nothing I was happier about when I moved back from BC to Alberta a few years ago than knowing I never have to deal with ICBC again.

I don't really get the ICBC hate, at least in terms of rates. I pay about $1000-1100 a year for full coverage w/ $2M liability on a car worth about $12K. Out of curiosity I went through a multi-quote site for Alberta insurance and the quotes ranged between $1523 and $2198.

I did have a fender bender about 5 years ago; maybe ICBC is more lenient about that kind of stuff.

I wasn't even referring to monthly insurance payments. More to do with the ridiculous hoops they make you jump through as an out of province resident.

Was just constant headaches dealing with them the whole time I was there. They still owe me $200, I'll never see it though.

Neither of them went for that, I tried. Even though I drive perfectly safe, they don't want me to mess up the cost of their insurance. Good parents, eh?

Wehn your dealing with qoutes on insurance, you have to make sur ewhat coverage you have vs what someone else may have. For example.... Someone might say they have full coverage. That person may indeed have full coverage (liability, Collision and Comprehensive)The question is this. What EXACTLY do they have..... deductible amounts, loss of use limits...etc. The list can be quite detailed if you don't really know what to look for. Most people don't even know how to read their own insurance documents. The odd person does but for the most part.....most don't have a clue as to what they have coverage for anmd what the loimits are on their policy.. Be aware as to what coverage you have. If you are unsure than call your agent and ask. They should help you. If they don't.......simple........leave for anyther company.
