hahaha - gotta love people who name their animals after athletes. Has Votto committed yet, because the last I heard on Friday, he still wasn't "fully" intending on attending this tournament?
I know! We're totally awesome.
The better half loves baseball but not a huge hockey fan so I couldn't get the cat named after a Flame

In Pool A as expected, Japan and Cuba have advanced with two wins, Brazil and China are eliminated. Japan and Cuba play Wednesday night for positioning.
Pool B is much more interesting, Taiwan has 2 wins, Korea and Holland are 1-1 with Australia 0-2. On Tuesday Holland plays Australia while Taiwan plays Korea.
I fully expect Holland to win so if Korea wins there's a 3-way tie for 1st.
Tiebreaker: In the event three Federation Teams are tied with each other such tie shall be broken by ranking Earned Runs Team's Quality Balance ("ER-TQB", i.e., the sum of earned runs scored divided by the number of innings played on offense, minus the number of earned runs allowed, divided by the number of innings played on defense (ERS/IPO)-(ERA/IPD)=ER-TQB)).

Korea beat Taiwan 3-2 but it wasn't enough. A medalist in both previous versions of the WBC, Korea is out in the first round.
Taiwan and Holland advance to the 2nd round with Japan and Cuba. That double elimination tournament starts on Thursday night.
The games on this side of the Pacific start on Thursday evening with Dominican Rep. vs Venezuela (YIKES!).
Canada begins play against Italy at 12:30pm Friday

Looking forward to the tournament getting going in NA. One thing I've found weird... in Japan the attendance has been poor for the home team. When they played China only 13k went. That's lower than the average attendance for any team in the Japanese majors. I expect low number for the other games but thats very low for a home team and clearly the interest in baseball overall is higher than that. I wonder - is the tournament just not that big there?

It was strange, especially since they were playing in Fukuoka and they rarely get a chance to see the national team. Perhaps tickets were too expensive or the competition against Brazil and China just didn't interest anyone. The next round in at the Tokyo Dome and it should be a better turnout.
Meanwhile in Taiwan, the crowd was nuts!

True Story: I almost bought a Lee Dae Ho Lotte Giants retro jersey when I lived near Busan back in 2009. (It's probably one of the sweetest looking jerseys of all-time, IMO) But I couldn't get one my size, so I ended up buying one of a guy I didn't know. My Korean friend told me afterwards that the jersey I bought was that of the first base coach.
Anyways...it's too bad the Koreans got eliminated. I remembered watching a few games with the locals in 2009 and they were really ramped up about the WBC.
Hup Holland???
The Following User Says Thank You to goodyear For This Useful Post:
Romo became Exhibit A for why the World Baseball Classic is not considered a great idea among the people who are responsible for winning Major League Baseball games.
Thursday's game at Salt River Fields, the spring training facility of the Diamondbacks and Rockies, was a lazy March afternoon at the ballpark. Italy and Mexico plodded along. None of the players looked like they were particularly at the top of their games. The fans cheered and waved their flags, but aside from that - and the fact that the game started with three national anthems - it felt pretty much like a spring training game.
Until the top of the ninth inning. That's when a real baseball game broke out.
And that's when Romo was asked to go from zero to 90, from March to October, in one half-inning.
The upshot was that Italy - an overlooked team made up of mostly Italian Americans with only a few direct connections to the motherland - tagged Mexico with a surprising loss.
Aeneas could play for Italy. He can hit homeruns, and he really likes Florence.
No one watching this? Canada losing 5-1 in the 4th inning to ITALY!! Yes I know it's basically Canada vs Italian Americans, but this was the game we need to win.
Good thing we still have a lot of baseball to play today.
