I hope this one is as big as they get over there. Glad to hear that it didn't generate too much of a tsunami.

This is a awesome site that shows every earthquake. Good to scare mainlanders into moving out here.

No kidding, first I heard of it was on here.
I guess my expectations were a little out of whack since I thought a 7.7 was a pretty serious magnitude but seems to have dissipated with a whimper.
Then again, with the recent tendency of 9.0 followups hopefully they escape this one relatively unscathed.

Knowing Rob Brown hes probably out there doing his best Aquaman impression and fighting the Tsunami to keep it down and minimize any damage to Vancouver.

That's the prediction though.
"The Big One" is expected to be around 9 magnitude and it'll occur on the Cascadia subduction.

Here's another good site for checking recent earthquake activity (and any weather system)
It's called intellicast, and you have to "add" earthquakes to the map, but it's pretty sweet, and you can see what's happening worldwide.
Side note, and I'm not sure if it's been mentioned here yet, but the same area that got hit last night also just had a 5.1 hit them too.

When I visited Vancouver and Vancouver Island last summer, I thought the Disaster Response Route signs were quite interesting, and a little eerie - certainly not something you see in many other cities (maybe not any?) in Canada.
For any current or former Vancouverites - was awareness of the risk of a big earthquake or tsunami something that you thought about often? Did you keep a disaster preparedness kit in your home? Is it something people talk about at all?

People talk about it, some have kits, some don't.
I am of the opinion that should a 9.whatever earthquake strike the city, life isn't going to be that much more comfortable with a preparedness kit. Not that that should dissuade one from having a kit, but, dropping a bomb in the middle of the city isn't going to be helped by some bottles of water, granola bars and bandages.
Despite the initial devastation, I don't think it's likely that you'd see a massive humanitarian crisis like when a disaster strikes a place like Haiti, Iran or Thailand in the form of tsunami, or the gulf coast during storm season. The devastation wrought would be massive, of course, and casualties likely 'significant'. Prolonged devastation? Doubtful.
If I lived out in Surrey or Delta, I'd probably have a more elaborate kit.

I was in my friends kitchen in Langley eating dinner and the light above the table hangs, it started to sway back and forth for no reason. An hour later the earthquake was reported, on the news.

I was in San Francisco during a small earthquake.
Definitely a weird feeling.

When I was a kid, serious earthquakes only happened in California, Alaska, etc. Small earthquakes in the Vancouver area were more a curiosity and something to talk about but I never considered to be in danger. Science has made us re-look at the situation and realize we are susceptible.

I remember doing earthquake drills regularly in school growing up.
Everyone always had the attitude that the island would protect us from a big waive on the mainland.

Obviously cool story bro territory but....
Parents live up in terrace. Had some things fall off the wall and house shaking but nothing severe.

Well one thing's for sure, we won't hear about it for at least an hour as the news channels discuss whether picnics could be rained out in Toronto.
