Barclay's Center is only 6 miles from MSG and 13 miles from the Prudential Center.

Why bad timing? It's not like the team is moving immediately and it's not like the information wouldn't leak once the lease agreement was reached.

Plus, it's in the player's best interest to see that the NHL is willing to move teams to potentially more profitable cities.

Literally 20 minutes door to door from MSG to Barclays via subway. Pru Center is about 20-30 minutes in the opposite direction from MSG. There's certainly no shortage of options in the area, now if we can just get an operating league...

Exactly what I was thinking. The NHL can walk into the next meeting noting the expected increase in revenue by the Islanders, along with the impending relocation of the Coyotes and the potential for expansion as reasons why the union should accept the NHL's offers. Increased revenues will help cover the players' contracts.

Hmm, it's a good move, but also a strange one.

Good move since it's to a much better location in the NY area.

Strange because you're going to a venue that is undersized in arena capacity (less than Jets!) and doesn't have an ideal hockey configuration.

Are they going to do major renovations to an arena that just opened? Or is this just a temporary move until Wang can get a venue he truly wants?

The Isles committing long term would make it financially viable for the building to renovate to add additional seating for hockey. Add 2000 new seats that bring in $100 each for 50 dates a year and your looking at ten million a year in additional revenues. That can pay for a pretty good renovation.

It depends if that kind of renovation is even possible. They intentionally chose a design that maximized seating and sightlines for basketball, I have my doubts they would sacrifice that for the Islanders. So the question is whether they can add seats for hockey without compromising the benefits they sought out.

This.

Brooklyn is still part of Long Island, so why would they abandon a reputable brand thats been around for decades? (Albeit in a tough time right now).

One side of that arena is going to feel very odd without stands at the bottom.

New York Times reporting 25 year agreement with Barclay's Center:

Under the 25-year agreement, which has to be officially approved by the National Hockey League, the Islanders would move to the Barclays for the 2015-16 season.
