But is it a foolish action, though? These bug eating contests are held all the time, all over the world. They're featured on popular TV shows, and have never been seen as dangerous or darwin-esque.

In this case it was fatal, and as such foolish, in hindsight. Foolish nonetheless.
Nominees never expect their actions to result in their own death, it would be the suicide awards.

Whoops, posted before you added this..

That right there tells me this wasn't a Darwin award death. There's absolutely nothing extraordinarily idiotic about participating in a bug eating contest.

Being fatal doesn't make it foolish, though, or else every death would be foolish Also, it would only be the suicide awards if people were trying to die.

My point exactly. It's a Darwin Award worthy foolish action to eat cockroaches and die from it.

But doesn't it specifically state that the person has to die "in an extraordinarily idiotic manner"? This wasn't extremely idiotic, and it waasn't foolish. It was just a completely random, odd death. The person didn't do anything out of the ordinary to earn a darwin award. Eating bugs is completely normal and done all over the world.

Eating whole live bugs to the point where you are risking your life, to win a contest...sounds kinda foolish.
I guess it is debatable, it meets 4 out of 5 criteria for sure. The 5th criteria is whether or not his actions were of astoundingly stupid judgment? I would say he was foolish for partaking in an action whereas it is common, however, to the extent where his actions were extraordinary and not common.
I suppose a sensational headline makes me think it is a Darwin Award worthy, but I can see how it wouldn't be.

Well, I guess techincally if he was over-doing it terms of the number of cockroaches he was putting down, then he could probably qualify.
I guess it isn't as cut and dried as I thought it was, and likewise for you. Good debate, sir.

I didn't read every post, but where does it say he died because of the roaches? Maybe he died of a heart attack completely unrelated to the roaches. Is eating roaches known to be deadly? I just getting at the Darwinian thing, personally I don't think it qualifies. They eat roaches on Fear Factor all the time.

I'm still waiting for the cause of death too as I'm just curious why that would kill someone.
