I don't call people fags because they appear to be/are homosexual, I call them fags because they're being faggy.
There's a difference between "Nice pink shirt, fag" and "You fag, give me my hat back."
BTW, how come "fag" isn't censored on here? I got scared for a second there thinking swearing was suddenly allowed.

The context has to matter.
Otherwise that means that things like "hey #### face I totally screwed your sister last night" will no longer be acceptable dressing room talk amonst friends as it will be equivalent to someone saying that they really did have sex with your sister and calling you a #### face.
I'm not saying that uses of fag and gay as pejorative terms, without any overt homophobia attached to their context are fine. I just don't think outlawing certain words is a good idea.

What is more important, how you say something or how others hear it?

Sorry. That sounds bad in any context, unless you are quoting to the police what the guy said that provoked you to punch him in the head.

Is there any context where the commonly derogatory name for an African American is appropriate?
Same thing. Different decade.

Have you ever listened to a rap song that wasn't by Will Smith?

You guys don't get it. Today that word gets tossed around almost as if it's acceptable. Obviously, you shouldn't go around calling gay people "###s" (I've said it enough). It's hard to explain, but if somebody called me a ### because I socked them in the arm, it carries a different meaning than, say, if I gave him a smooch on the lips and he proceeded to call me a ###
Of course I'm not homophobic. However, you have to look at the context in which the word is said. If another student took my hat and I said "give it back, ya ###" and he turned out to be gay, of course I would feel like crap for calling him that and give him a sincere apology. If I knew the guy was straight and was simply being an arsehole, then I couldn't care less. I try my hardest not to offend anybody and I only use that word around my close friends (the only place you should ever use that word if you're not looking to offend somebody), not complete random kids that I do not know.
Obviously if I was trying to offend somebody, then what I am doing would be wrong on so many levels. But I'm not trying to offend anybody, that person is just being a ###. (see below)
When I use the word - 100% of the time: Fag = arsehole, tool, ######bag, dumbass.
This is sort of like the "gay = stupid" thing that's been floating around forever now. Ex) After an underwhelming fireworks performance: "that was gay."

Ok true, but not what I was referring to.
How how this, is there any context where it would be appropriate for YOU to say it? Especially one that would be like the way you used the word fag in your previous post.

Wow, that's pretty harsh, but it was FORTY years ago. I feel sorry for this dude. Not because some bullies labelled him a fag in his yearbook, but because he carried it around with him for forty years. That's some sad ####.

Just use those ^ words instead? Fag shouldn't be used in that context and "gay=stupid" is just as bad. It's offensive. Just don't say it. Expand your vocabulary.
Or go ahead and say it, but know what you're saying. It's not the same as calling someone a dick. Not as bad as n#####, but it's along similar lines.
