That argument only works in Ontario.

I also think the consenting age of 16 is a joke, you have to be 18 to be able to legally drink, drive, gamble and vote, but you can consent to sex when you are 16? For God sake, you have to be 19 to be able to buy smokes.

There is rather strong evidence that the intellectual portions of an adolescent's brain matures well before the emotional portions. This is why you have kids doing dumb things like engaging in unprotected sex while being geniuses in certain academic subjects. Maybe it would make more sense to lower the voting age for kids while raising the age of consent. I would be interested in knowing more about how they come to decisions when deciding on legal ages.

Driving is 16, and as for the others, those ages are different in different jurisdictions. Why is it that an 18 yr old in BC cannot drink, but they can in AB? Or how about a 20 yr old who can gamble in MB, but not in the States? Why can you vote, but not drink in much of the states?
Or how about the marriageable age? In Canada, it's 18, or 16 with parental consent, or 14 with Judicial consent.
Face it, age of consent is a difficult topic, even if it doesn't involve sex. The age has changed frequently, and will change again.

Is that supposed to be a rebuttal? I don't think you'd find to many people who consider going 10 over to be morally reprehensible if you, your car, and the environment can handle it (which is often the case).

Or military, you can join the reserves @ 16 or regs at 17 (both need parental consent)....

I'm just saying, the law doesn't deal well with arbitrary. You need hard laws, that's the only way it works.
As one would expect to be punished for speeding, this officer should be punished for what he did. 20 day sentence is a slap on the wrist. Anyone other than a cop would have gotten more I would imagine.

I thought because he is in a position of authority, age of consent is 18.

I know this is true for teachers. Maybe it's different in Ontario.
The whole thing is brutal. He was caught buying them booze as well! And this is the punishment? Jail on weekends?
Another case of a police officer being above the law. Disgusting.

Sure. Legally, it's black and white (although I would imagine the sentence falls into the confines of the law ). Morally, age of consent is very much grey.

These things happen everyday where someone gets off what seems easy. The only difference is it doesn't make the papers and/or isn't talked about because it's not a cop.

I would agree, though with this particular act involving a police officer, I feel it becomes much less grey.

Morally pretty much any situation is grey. This situation isn't different from hundreds of others.

He also knowingly provided alcohol to a minor which may also have skewed her decision making abilities.
He didnt just have sex with a minor, he also got her drunk first.

I hope this guy is an ex-cop by now. There is no excuse! None! His next job should have him asking, "Would you like fries with that?"

But this is a police officer, who got kids drunk, partied with them, than slept with one of them. And he serves 20 days over weekends? Doesn't lose his job?
This is a MASSIVE miscarriage of justice and another example of cops being above the law.
