I keep saying there's always next year but I'm not so sure the future is as bright as we're led to believe.

Also, what a bad time for the hitting stumble.

There is a difference. We are actually making steps to address weaknesses with realistic long term solutions. The pen is no longer god awful and will be semi decent for a few years.
Now we only need an above average LF, a decent DH, and a pair of starters (1 #1/#2, and one #3/#4) and we're ready for the playoffs.
If you bump the payroll up to 100 million (only raising it by 17 mil over this year), you should definitely be able to fill all of those holes without difficulty.

I think they need a second baseman as well... if you're going to have a guy playing there who hits around .230/.240 you need at least average D - Johnson isn't horrible with the glove but he has no range at all. There are no blue chippers in the system at second either and not a lot of great players on the trade market there, that and the two starters are going to be tough to find without giving up some of the great pitching prospects they have coming. At least pitching wise there are a couple guys available on the free agent market if rogers decides to spend some dough.
LF could potentially come from within (although I am not sold on that myself for next year) and DH's are easy to come by in the offseason.

Likely going to get swept by the Mariners.
Embarrassing.

Could always move Escobar over and have Hech come up. Other than that, you can sign a temp guy (like Scutaro) not a big big big problem but it'll have to get fixed eventually.

Not so much. Mariners are the 2nd best team in the AL after the Allstar break.
Finally starting to put it together.

Thing is Escobar is pretty much all arm and not great range either, I don't think he'd be a good 2b - if he was even willing to move which I question. I think Escobar is gone before spring training.
There were some rumors on Jose Altuve earlier this year, who they'd have to sell the farm to get... but I think if they want to start contending he's exactly what the team is lacking - a modern Roberto Alomar type who plays amazing D and can actually get on base consistently. Lots of power in the lineup but a prototypical leadoff man is missing.
That said Houston management would have to be suicidal to trade Altuve after years and years of rebuilding. More realistically, they've got Delino Deshields Jr., one of the top 2b prospects in baseball, being blocked by Altuve and no major league catcher. The Jays apparently wanted to draft him before Houston swooped that year though he's only at A ball so he's two years away.

Altuve is 22 years old why would Astros deal him unless they are getting Darnaud and Snydegaard which seems like a silly deal for the Jays.

Sigh, why do I think the Jays will get swept by the A's as well?
