I use a briefcase for work. more of the bag style one though. Shoulder strap off.

Dark brown leather, holds a full binder, my laptop and accessories. I don't see a better option for the workplace and I am a young guy at an engineering firm

I'm used to have leather shoulder bag for work, but found that I hated bringing it anywhere. I leave most of my physical papers in the office and use everything else electronically via remote access. I found that just having a nice leather folder or dossier worked way better for me. That's what I bring to meetings with clients.

I also usually have a gym bag with me and hate having two shoulder bags to lug around.

When I saw briefcase I mean modern style, which is probably more of a messenger bag.

Some of us do need to carry books, binders, papers and documents for our jobs.

The problem is I don't know what to look for, let alone where to look. I want something good quality, and I like the idea of a shoulder strap.

There are good places recommended to look, thanks.

Harry Rosen downtown has nice $500 tumi TUMI bags - check those out and and see if the style suits you.

If the price hurts, try to source online for a similar style

I enjoy all of the "get a laptop/tablet" comments as well. There are a lot of businesses at this point where a wet signature is necessary. I don't want to date myself here, but I also carry a device called a "pen" for that reason. I also have a separate device called a calculator that I use regularly. So when it comes time to gather up these materials and move to my next meeting I want something other than a reusable shopping bag to carry my things in (plastic bags are so outdated).
That was a great reply but just for reference sake I was talking about your saggy old balls.

I would guess that you and I aren't that far from each other in terms of age...although I really have no idea.

A grown man should not be wearing a backpack to any kind of job that requires him to wear a shirt with a collar. I'm not really a fan of messenger bags either unless you are riding a bicycle, but if you choose that route, they should be carried by the handle (not the shoulder strap) whenever possible.

Check out Danier. I just bought a nice, professional looking bag from one of their stores for $170. It came with a shoulder strap, but I don't use it.

I wear a suit and tie to work (articling student at a large corporate law firm) so it was a necessity.

endless.com has good prices. Bought my wife a Marc Jacobs bag for $330. At Holt Renfrew, same bag was $550.

Why the hell not? I don't do business development, I don't see clients unless I'm at my desk and I don't do out of office meetings. My backpack carries my water bottle, lunch kit, ipod, headphones, two glasses cases and some small tool type accessories. It does its job perfectly. Anyone shallow enough to judge me on the fact that I use a backpack isn't someone I'd want to associate with anyhow.

i have found this store in calgary very helpful for all types of professional accessories (not sure if that's the proper term) including some great briefcases/bags. very knowledgeable and helpful staff. i know they also ship country-wide.

i personally enjoy using a nice pen and they've got a great selection across the board
