Things are just a mess here at work (Foothills Hospital).

Normally we use a piece of software called Talkstation.

That is gone.

Normally as a backup we use Millennium/Express Scribe.

That is gone.

As a backup to that we do things on tape and save them to a network drive.

Network drive is gone.

Just a mess.

I'll never tell!

Actually Shaw put a fiber fed point-of-presence in our data center that connects to a different ring than downtown. We have a second fiber as well that we COULD do BGP over if we really want to make sure CP NEVER goes down . . .

. . . we'll do that after our phone project (one day it will get done!)

X929 has been playing off and on Classic Rock and County Music in honor of County105 and Q107 which went down with the explosion, despite being owned by a rival company.

I think its pretty funny when I hear Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb followed by an voice over going "X929, Calgary's New Rock Alternative"

The new shaw datacentre has a ways to go yet. The concrete cell is up, but I don't think the exterior enclosure has even started yet.

Yup, that thing is taking a while to build. Sure looks like there is a massive amount of concrete going into it.

That's not actually entirely true, unless you mean you can't log on to their credit card website. This is from their website...

"Due to the events in Calgary today, we've experienced outages to some of our systems.
ABM, Point of Sale and MasterCards are available, and our Customer Care Centre or branch staff are also available to assist customers.
We are currently working to restore ATB Online and ATB.com as soon as possible, please check back here or on our ATB Financial Twitter account (@atbfinancial) for updates."

I was able to use my debit card fine yesterday at 4-ish.

A lot of AHS stuff seems to be down. I think the merge left the e-mail server in Calgary, right?

630 CHED and all its Oilers commercials being broadcast over Calgary airwaves is making me laugh.

They have a ton of systems hosted in the datacentre at Shaw Court. Email being one of them.

A fire broke out in a transformer on the 13th floor, but as the backup system came on, the sprinklers took it down, as well.
"Water and electricity aren’t a good combination," Bissonnette said.
The company "absolutely" apologizes for the break down, he said.

So I'm wondering, if this always the case? Seems kind of dumb to have a back up system that can be crippled by a security system (The sprinklers)

Dumb Dumb Dumb...

All the data centers / critical areas that I've worked in, all had Halon or some sort of fire suppression system.

Water + data = major failures.

No doubt the new data centre will have modern fireproofing technologies. I also suspect the floors where the servers themselves are hosted already have such. They probably failed to consider the effects of water and the mechanical systems would have on said data systems.

From what we are hearing, Shaw will regain access to the building to begin energizing the data centre no earlier than 2PM. In our case, we are estimating midnight as the earliest possible time we can get at our own servers.

Wouldn't there be a better way of dealing with potential fire without using water in those locations? That's just doesn't seem smart.

Just a mess.
Foothills hospital doesnt have its own local server?

WAN disconnect should not disrupt LAN connectivity, thats just poor network planning.

I think this was an awesome and classy move by X92.9. Even if they're rivals, they can imagine the mess caused by a network outage.

Good on them.
