Wow, Calagry is winning the poll, with second being 'it's impossible to say.'
Haha, not that I would stand behind that comment, but it'd be funny to win the poll. 'Hmmm, guess it must be true!'
In all seriousness, like many have said, it's just a typical comment for a large crowd and large event. In fact, considering the importance of the anniversary, you knew he would say SOMETHING like that.
I mean, could you imagine hosting a party and saying, 'You guys are the second best group of friends I have! Now let's have some fun!' ?

I didn't think I could lose any more respect for the "news" media in this country, then they create this "controversy" and it happens.
What are they, 8 years-old?

Let's make a big deal about nothing guys. It's just like Chretien harping about how much he loved Shawinigan.

I would have to say that the biggest factor preventing Calgary from truly being the best city in Canada is the weather which is just awful. It's nearly always cool or cold. You know that a city's weather is annually terrible when a small handful of near 30 degree days promps large groups of people whining that it's too hot.

Although yes, the climate in Vancouver (downtown especially) is much worse than Victoria.

I don't think it would have bene a controversy if the Vancouver mayor hadn't gotten pissy and tried to burn down his city hall

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I actually respect Harper more for not backing down. My personal favourite large Canadian city is Ottawa, but it's not for everyone. Calgary is also up there and arguably functions better, so it depends on what criteria you use. Calgary is #1 on a lot of things.
But could you imagine if Chretien or Martin said that Montreal or Quebec City was the greatest city in the country?

Southern Ontario really isn't that bad and areas of southern BC as well but otherwise pretty much.

Everyone knew those guys had no use whatsoever for the West so really who would be shocked if they did? This is simply big news bacause in a country that has been Eastern biased forever our Prime Minister called a Western City the best.

Don't you mean the weather is nearly perfectly cool year round, as evidenced by how uncomfortable people are when the weather does occasionally get too hot on only a handful of days?

I love Calgary and hate the rain, but let me tell you as much as I hate rain in Victoria I never have to shovel it from my driveway before I go to work.
I think all cities have their plus and minuses and saying one city is better than another is more of a personal opinion than a fact.

Which is why people getting their panties in a bunch about a politician saying something nice about the place he's currently in is ridiculous.

I don't think anyone is getting their panties in a bunch over this, unless its about the media trying to fabricate a story where there is none. Now that pisses me right off, and this obviously counts as that.

Try reading the comments at the CBC story. They are working themselves into a lather as usual.

The media, with this and the French anthem stuff, has basically gotten their news for the week for Stampede. With no animals dying and apparently a decline in incidents at the Stampede, they've needed a few stories to fill the pages. Newsmedia shouldn't ever wonder why its dying.
