I find it interesting that this is all happening in a down period in the success of the Leafs. It will be interesting to see what happens to the support base for a second GTA team when the Leafs turn it around. I suspect it will evaporate.

By then we'll all have flying cars and the Markham Hams will have won the 2097 Stanley Cup to finally surpass Toronto's 13 cup wins with their 14th.

Most Americans know where Anaheim is. There was a Major League Baseball team called the Anaheim Angels.
Ontario is also a city in California, which works against it.
EDIT: The NHL also vetoed the original name for the Colorado Avalanche -- the Rocky Mountain Extreme.

Jesus Christ, what were they thinking? That name is just all kinds of grim.

That sounds more like an elaborate sex maneuver than a team name!

Actually, calling the team the "Upper Canada" whatevers would be all kinds of awesome. Sadly, I don't think very many Canadians would even get the reference anymore. Americans would be completely lost.
Also, what are these guys up to lately? http://www.torontolegacy.com/

I currently live in Markham and have for a long time now, if a second team comes to the GTA it will sell out on a regular basis. I only go to the odd Maple Leafs game and it is always so hard to get tickets. All but 5,000 tickets are sold to corporate sponsorship so the general public will always be eager to see nhl games in the GTA.
I hope there is a second team but I can just see the division of the fickle leaf fans now. Further, if there is a second team it will not have a huge impact on the Leafs sales. The leafs year after year put out a terrible bandwagon creating product and yet people jump on it every year.

That's because they've had pro teams in the Ducks and Angels. Before the Mighty Ducks, it was that city that had Disneyland for people who knew it wasn't in LA.

That was after the Mighty Ducks joined the NHL. They had been known as the California Angels before that.

Are you from Markham? It is funny that you say that as there are an insane amount of Asians here. They make great neigbors though with the exception that they dont like to cut their lawns. The woman are great, man my condo was never as clean as when I had an Asian gf, you could eat eggs out of the toilet that place was so clean.
The place they are putting the arena is actually in Unionville which is a small suburb in Markham. The traffic there is already a nightmare but ti is right beside a go station so I think it will float.
They already have the area designated it will be starting soon.

Right, because obviously the options are a cookie cutter hell hole and a trailer park. There couldn't possibly be a middle ground

Arkham Asylum is the mental institution in the batman universe.
The other problem with Upper Canada "whatevers" is that it's counter intuitive to the geographical layout of Canada (i.e. it's basically the most southern point of the country).
Try explaining to someone it has to do with the flows and basins of the St. Lawrence.
