Well, they're not moving away in five years and that's for sure.
I did work with a guy in Grande Prairie and then Calgary for more than a decade who spent every waking moment figuring out how he could get back to Toronto, which he eventually did.
But he's the exception I think.

I was in and out in 9 years. I've worked with plenty of people that followed the same progression. Move to Calgary for a job, get your P. Eng, find a nice cushy job with Shell on the Rock, and move back. Pretty standard fare.
About the smugness, I don't know anything about Toronto, but there's nothing quite like Vancouver and the Lower Mainland when it comes to smugness and condescension. It's a beautiful place filled with ugly personalities, IMO. I've spent a lot of time down there and have met a lot of people, so I might only have anecdotal evidence, but I have a heluva lot of it.

Not individually as people, but as a group, absolutely. It's the same sort of smug condescension you get from the prius driving hemp wearing guy working at the local organic food store. The "my culture and life choices are better than yours" type.

Yeesh. Quite a bit of hypocrisy around here and unfortunately not enough green text. I hate to see that smug and condescending tone be true.
All I can say is that he who is enjoying his time in the sun usually smiles the widest. I'm sure there will be a shift in that attitude, whether sooner or later, when Alberta isn't the economic powerhouse anymore, or is matched by another province with a particularly strong industry.

Well if you stopped idling your F350 crew cab diesel out in the parking lot....

God forbid that Alberta ever become a have not province. I mean all that Quebec produces is debt to support their lazy self entitled people. Ontario wouldn't know how to do profitable business if Donald Trump was running the place, and between all the dope smoking and smoke from riots I'm amazed that Vancouver has two brain cells to rub together, and even if they did its unlikely that they could fire a single thought between the whole buncha them.
Lets be honest, without Alberta money, hard work and know how, this country is a third world welfare nanny state broke country.
We should buy Ontario and make it into a large parking lot while we import cheap workers from that province. We should buy Qwibec and shutter the province except for their strip bars, smoked meat sandwich shops and escort services as its the only things that those Qwibeccors do well.
Now to the other provinces I say shhhhhh, the big kids are talking now, so shut up and take all the money that we're giving you and do what we say.

*gets on soap box*
And this is why we need a strong centralized federal government to manage and limit the fracturing regionalism that pulls Canadians apart.

Given that a "strong centralized federal government" has historically meant "panders to Ontario and Quebec", I'll go ahead and veto that idea. Though it would sure make central Canada's whiners happy.
Truth is, we need more decentralization. Regional rivalries will always exist. Pretending that some tool from Quebec, now living in Ottawa, has the slightest understanding or level of care about Vancouver or Calgary does not make for a better or more united country.

People in Vancouver and Calgary aren't the different except for some subtle differences. People in Calgary like to spend time in the office making money while people in Vancouver would rather spend their time smoking weed. People in Calgary focus their hockey celebrations on getting women to remove their tops while people in Vancouver prefer to remove the windows from storefronts.

From the looks of this thread I don't know how anyone could conclude that Albertans are smug.

I guess we find the Quebbbies funny because we're not used to white people who refuse to speak English.
