When you try to bring up these comparisons, the console wars are going to come out again like it always has (remember Super Nintendo versus Genesis?).

It all comes down to what you want to do with your parenting decisions. I'm curious, how old would your son have to be to be able to play some FPS games? I'm of the mindset that FPS games or war games don't make people more violent but everyone thinks differently.

i dont know when, its impossible to set a line in the sand and say on this day he isnt old enough and the next day he is. when he can demonstrate he understands the difference between a game and real life AND that the over the top gore in these games wont disturb him, then he is ready.

he isnt ready now and i am not in a rush, even though i would love to play some of those games myself.

I wish they would hurry up and come out the next version of Xbox and PlayStation.

My bet is 2013, in early fall for the first next gen consoles. I really don't follow this stuff though, so there might be some readily available information that contradicts me.

Well we are comparing two consoles, so comparing graphics and internal memory will definitely come into play.

I also have no new info but I can't imagine how either Sony or Microsoft could launch a new console that would interest me.

What I mean by that is I feel that we're past the point of just having better graphics be the appeal.

Whenever new consoles have been launched in the past, the "other" stuff has played a huge role. Ability to stream, larger HD, plays blurays, connectivity etc.

I honestly can't imagine what the next console could offer above and beyond better graphics. I can already stream all my media just fine using a PS3 or 360, they both have so much HD space I couldn't possibly ever fill them, bluray isn't much of a selling point anymore.

What is going to set the new system apart from the current generation? Kinect? Not for me it won't. Better graphics? How much better? It better be mind blowing if the new console offers nothing else of value.

And I'll also stipulate that I have no additional information and there may be plenty of readily available information that contradicts everything I posted.

From what I understand, the next gen consoles will all offer a much better experience for media. I don't know what that means for sure but I imagine both systems will probably become a gaming system almost as a secondary thing. I know there is supposed to be an ultra cheap version of the xbox720 that is going to stream media and be a portal for things like Netflix, internet, etc

whatever next gen gaming console is the one that can stream HD .mkv files natively, allowing me to rewind and fast forward and not have to jump through any transcoding hoops, will get my money

I play 1080p mkvs easily on the PS3 without any transcoding. The hardware is perfectly capable. My PS3 even works as an FTP server so I can just drag and drop files to the harddrive at Gigabit ethernet speeds. I use Showtime for PS3.

Depends what you prefer. I have both. PS3 acts as a better 'entertainment unit' (blueray, bluetooth, etc), but the 360 isn't that far behind. Xbox live is waaaay more user friendly then PSN. Well worth the $60/year subscription. The controller is better then PS3 and I like the games better on xbox. PS3 has more 'untapped' power, but usually in comparison the xbox games still look better. I love the achievments for xbox. I will always choose xbox 10/10, but again it comes down to personal preference.

PS3 made sense when Blue-Ray players were like 400 bucks, now they are 100, ill still get the superior (IMO) console any day of the week.

I assuming you are installing showtime over the ps3 OS? so it is just a dedicated media server?

I've never really understood this argument. I understand that ultimately, it comes to fun factor. But for me, graphics is part of the whole gaming experience. For sure graphics and sound abilities factor into my decision when choosing a console.

Case in point, I just finished Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. But a lot of times while I was playing it, I kept thinking it was such a shame that this game wasn't made for the PS3 or the Xbox360 instead of the Wii. I think it would have made my experience that much better. Probably would have hands down been the best JRPG of this generation had it been done in HD rather than ugly SD.

I'm saying that a console is not what you buy if graphics are what you are concerned about.

Graphics on both systems are about on par, with the PS3 suffering from multi-platform titles that obviously were designed for the Xbox 360 first and ported over haphazardly.

As far as the games that supposedly take advantage of the PS3's "untapped power" I haven't seen any examples of one in many years, even in the exclusive titles like Uncharted.

PS3 still works for gaming but Showtime gets launched via Multiman and custom firmware. You may have to stick to older firmware or not go online with that system.

I was just pointing out that the PS3 is perfectly capable and totally powerful enough to do playback of 1080p mkvs on the fly as is demonstrated by user made software.

That the official Sony side of media playing doesn't have this functionality or smoothness is a failing on Sony's part.

I have both but prefer the ps3 partially for the blu-ray, free network ect.. But probably mostly due to my bitterness of what a piece of crap the 360 was when it first came out. I had to sent it to Quebec to get fixed twice ( free but took a month each time). Pretty much everyone I knew at the time had to sent one off at least once to get fixed. And having to keep a 20 pack of AA batteries by the couch because the controllors died so quickly was annoying too. I realize these issues have been fixed but it still annoys me thinking about it.
