I would be surprised if we ingest 1% of the water that comes into the house. A third idea would be to degrade the water coming into the house and have the drinking water delivered.
I still stand though that this will never happen when water is cheap enough to be considered free.
Just because you aren't drinking the water, doesn't mean you can simply use filthy water for all other purposes

I live on Vancouver Island in a temperate rainforest. I have 20 minute hot showers everyday(except when it's too hot out, then I have nice cool showers) and I flush every time...sometimes twice.

It seems the thread had gone silly already - but I'll still chime in with what I was going to say.

It's too much effort for such a little return. I try to save water, short showers, put in low flush toilets, low flow shower heads etc. But the reality is to do much more requires much more effort than I get back in savings. Putting in all that effort and witnessing your neighbors and other people in the city/country do nothing similar and still enjoy the same costs. I almost wonder if you'd be incurring a bigger loss by setting up a system and lifestyle to save water not to mention the time involved. As many people have said - right now there's no incentive!

A lot of this would change if we actually had to pay the real cost of water/sewage rather than the subsidized cost though. (Yes, we're still paying for it one way or another, but right now a lot of it is captured in things like property taxes and income taxes rather than on a "per litre used" basis on the water bill)

Is he in a cold climate area? I'd be pretty concerned about something that in Calgary.
