I am going to hear "The Greatest Love of All" way too many times in the next few days.
I was never a fan (loved Bobby Brown, though), but it's always sad when an addict can't overcome their addiction.

She was gone a long time ago . . . . . the corpse just wasn't cold yet.
I'm never properly sympathetic when a celebrity of fame and priviledge offs themselves with drugs or booze. Its hard to ratchet up any sympathy.
Great voice in her day. Definitely fell under the influence of the wrong guy.
Sad . . . . . but hard to be sympathetic.

Thousands of people every year "off themselves with drugs or booze." Celebrities fall into the trap more easily because they can get the stuff with no issue.
It doesn't mean that they can't have legitimate struggles with addiction.

I'm not so sure they fall into it more easily. Us lowly commoners tend to fall into the addiction spiral often enough, it just isn't televised for all to see. When it happens to a celebrity, it is glamourized and accepted, but when it happens to an ordinary person, we attribute it to a lack a principles.

A "legitimate" struggle with addiction?
Which ones are illegitimate?
Basically, a certain percentage of the population is prone through personality traits to risk taking which can lead to addiction.
Celebrities also have greater avenues to curing addictive behaviour.
When you have everything, as opposed to the opposite, as well as the immediate means to escape the trap if you're still weak, your situation is automatically less sympathetic, at least to me.
Everyone has a different opinion.

As much as a tragedy as it is based on her immense level of talent, hopefully people with drug problems will look at these celebrities who blow their talent and lives and get help.

Celebrities also have to deal with the constant attention they get from the paparazzi and lunatic fans that stalk them. They may have everything but losing your privacy and the ability to go anywhere without being noticed is a huge drawback.

Did you know that Whitney Houston’s debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that?
It’s hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but “The Greatest Love of All” is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it’s not too late to better ourselves. Since, it’s impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It’s an important message, crucial really. And it’s beautifully stated on the album.

Yup, but you mean lip-synched. Definitely a gear grinder of mine when people think artists can pull flawless performances off like that, when in reality the recordings are usually compilations of 30 or 40 takes. Madonna was almost trolling at the recent Super Bowl, she was so blatant about lip synching. Prop-tip on spotting it, watch the throat.
Bob Best, an NFL pre-game entertainment official told USA Today that the NFL chose the recorded version because "we felt there were too many risks to do it live." USA Today reported that it is customary to use pre-recorded versions of the anthem at games, adding that in the past such stars as Diana Ross, Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond have sung to their pre-recorded versions of "The Star Spangled Banner."[68] Best, in an interview with the New York Post, also said that what was played was "protection copy"―it's so-called to protect against the singer's last minute inability to sing―Houston recorded several days before the gameat an L.A. studio.[71] Kathryn Holm McManus, former executive director of the orchestra, in an interview with St. Petersburg Times in 2001, reaffirmed that, saying "At the game, everyone was playing, and Whitney was singing, but there were no live microphones. Everyone was lip-synching or finger-synching."
